Sears, Columbiana Centre, 100 Columbiana Circle: Early March 2014 29 comments
Well, it's old news now, but Sears at Columbiana Centre is closing, and today was the first time I was able to get out that way to get some shots. I'm going ahead with a pretty-well-in-advance closing to give us a landing page to talk about it, and because it's pretty big news. Hopfully I will get inside shots for an update at some point. Certainly the pre-printed closeout signs in these exterior shots are pretty familiar to us all by now (blurry or not..).
It appears that Belk will be taking over some, though not all of this space.
Frankly, given how hollowed-out the Columbia Mall store is at this point, I expected it to go first.

Actually I had to read this twice. I would have guessed that Columbia (Place) Mall's store would be closing first.

I saw the store closing sale the other night and my first thought was, wow, I guess if the stuff at K-Sears was too expensive for someone, they're in heaven right now. I haven't felt compelled to set foot in a Sears since the merger with KMart, and for a few years before that only to buy Craftsman tools. When they stopped offering the lifetime warranty on most of those, that was the end of my use for Sears.

When very young, the catalog is how we decided what we wanted for Christmas. Who remembers Sears and Roebuck in Five Points? With the big sign out front that proudly read "Sears Town".

I wasn't around when Sears left Harden Street but I've gathered it was to move out to what was then Columbia Mall when said facility opened in 1977.
I feel like said location has two strikes against it:
1) Sears is rumored to be on the way out
2) Columbia Place Mall doesn't exactly have the strongest community reputation anymoreIf/when Sears departs Columbia Place Mall, regardless of what CBL is able to harness to bring in, the mall is likely to continue to decline. Last time I was in said mall about 2 years ago, I noticed a shoe store of some sort that took over the former Old Navy that utilizes the bottom floor only and blocked off the escalator with custodial signage which I was turned off by.
I also wonder how many of you that remember Sears in Five Points can relate to the following Andy Rooney sentiment on Sears:
Sears...whatever happened to Roebuck? You never hear Sears Roebuck anymore. Call if you're out there Roebuck.

Hey Everyone,
I cannot recall any of the Sears stores that you are talking about on here. I do remember going to Sears as a kid and I always liked to look at the appliances. I may be the only kid that liked to do that. I guess I liked seeing the fake foods they would put in there to show what something could hold and then I remember dishwashers were clear so you could see the washing action. My mom would have to pull me away. I went to the sears closing sale about 2 or 3 weeks ago. Even though it was near the start of the sale they did not have a lot of stuff. I am guessing they stopped getting trucks a long time before they announced the closing. I was thinking about getting a new stove and refrigerator but all they had was the floor model and they were only 15% off at the time. I know they would run them at 25% off before they were closing. The store is a complete dump and looks just as it did when it opened. I do recall that the store expanded at sometime in the early late 90's I want to say. I was only in HS at the time so I did not really care about Sears then kind of like now. Sears and Kmart have zero connection with anyone my age or maybe anyone even a little older. Sears was a place that my grandma liked to shop. I did buy my first tv at Sears and I still had it up until a year ago and it worked great. I am looking forward to seeing what Belk does with the space. I am kind of glad that men will have their own store to shop at. It feels like a lot of times men are left out of stores and the space we have to shop is tiny and the girls have 3/4 of the store.William

And, of course, I remember the Christmas Wishbook. I don't know how many times I just *happened* to leave that out, and open to a particular page around Christmas..

OK - here are some of my 5-Points Sears memories (aside from all of the dog-eared Christmas Wishbook pages).
I know it was because I was little, but it seemed like it took forever to walk from one end of the store to the other.
I witnessed my first solar eclipse while there. It was so weird to see it get dark and all of the lights come on in the parking lot in the middle of a Saturday.
Our first artificial Xmas tree came from there. My folks used that tree until about 10 years ago. I bought them a new one just so I didn't have to help put that worn out thing together every year!
My Dad love Craftsman tools. We still have ton of hand tools and a 40+ year old table saw that still works like a charm.
We used to have a garden tractor/lawn mower that Dad bought in 1968 when he would plant a large garden every years. He gave it away some 20+ years later and it was still in perfect working condition. It had been rolled over several times and even down a 10 foot embankment with him on it once!!!
And now one for you guys. How many of you (and if you say no, I know you are lying) strayed towards the women's lingerie and 'unmentionable' section of the catalogs? Sort of like sneaking peeks at 'certain' articles in the National Geographic magazines....

@Homer, I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about--
I remember that eclipse -- we drove down to the beach to see it as the coast was in the middle of the "full" zone while Columbia was on the edge.
It seems like every eclipse was prefixed with "for the last time in the next 100 years" yet somehow they kept on happening every few years..
There is a Five Points Sears post btw..

Hey Ted - I've seen the 5-Points post before. I think that was the first place I posted the eclipse comment. I've been looking at some of the catalogs that were referenced by the link in my post from the other night and there are toys in some that I don't even remember. It's a kick to see some of that stuff again!!!!

Ahem...on to other things.
I don't remember the eclipse, but my parents took us to the beach to see it. They said it was completely eerie.
Incidentally, on Monday, August 21, 2017, we will have another eclipse with the line of totality passing through Lexington. Write it on your calenders!

I remember Sears catalogs, especially the last one that came out in 1994.
I hate to see Sears close more stores. What other major department stores are left that feature appliances, home and garden, an automobile service center, etc?
At some point, Sears Holdings will have one less banner to worry about. Kmart is as good as gone.

Ok - I am going to start this one off with a trip down memory lane. How many people out there are old enough to remember the Sears catalogs? Especially the Christmas wishbooks? I mean, this was the internet of the day...:^). Every year this inch thick book showed up in the mail with everything a kid could wish for Santa to bring down the chimney. I found a site that has a bunch of Sears wishbooks (as well as other retailers) ranging from 1933-1988. They are entire catalogs so be patient if it takes a bit of time for them to load.
