Well, Happy New Year folks!

When I don't spend the New Year in SC, I like to ring it in in Fernandina Beach, my father's hometown. My own little mini-tradition dating back a decade or so was to hit O'Kane's Irish Pub on Centre Street for the live music and champagne toast at midnight. So, I was rudely surprised when I ambled down from the hotel New Years Eve, and found the storefront dark. The next day, I asked another merchant on Centre Street what had happened, and she indicated that she had heard the owners divorced then couldn't agree on handling the lease. Whatever happened, the place seems to have closed in November.

Here is the place on New Years Eve/New Years Day 2012/2013:

In the event, I ended up next door at The Courtyard which was a smaller, a more sedate venue with an older crowd (ie: my age). I was quite impressed with the music though. Local artist Nora Ricci was performing, and she is quite good, with entertaining stage patter (very important for a small venue) as well as solid singing and playing:

  1. The pictures from when they were open looks like a place I would have enjoyed going to. I don't go out to bars, pubs or clubs much anymore. But when I was in my late teens and all through my twenties, I/we would drive across the state to get to a place we thought we would enjoy. I went to so many places, mostly in Columbia and Myrtle Beach, I'm just burnt out on the night life thing now or maybe just old. I built a game room and can stay at home and do most of the same things I did out at bars, with some exceptions of course. When in my twenties, there was a certain uncontrollable draw that magically pulled me to bars against my will. After one is married though, things change slightly.

  2. I should add the draw still seems to be there from time to time but the magic has disappeared, plus my better half has enough will for both of us.

  3. @Rick - I know the feeling. Hopefully I'm a bit wiser now (took me about 30 years to get there though). Almost all of my old haunts are long gone and the atmosphere just isn't the same as it used to be (yeah, you can read safety into that). Then I think of all of the money I have saved on the overpriced booze and cigars I used to go through not to mention the cab fares and/or hotel rooms when I'd have a 'little' too much. Hell, Claussen's Inn and Hampton Inn used to know me when I'd walk through the door.

Since my dad passed away last spring I have picked up one of his hobbies, woodworking and furniture restoration. So now I spend my extra money on tools and such for my workshop. I find it very relaxing and it gets my mind off of the five days of corporate America's BS I have to bear.

  4. Homer, Of all the hobbies I have tried, woodworking gives me the greatest pleasure.

  5. I've seriously considered woodworking, but I'd like to do it with hand tools. I hate the noise of power equipment.

  6. @tonkatoy - that's a little bit too old school for me...:^). I couldn't go without my band saw and Dremel tools....
