Sadie's, Richland Mall: November 2013 25 comments
Sadie's, in the old S & S slot in Richland Mall is closed again, this time for good (though the sandwich-board sign remains optimistic). They had closed once before a year or so ago for a change of ownership, but apparently that didn't help in the end.

I never went myself but I have an aunt that walks Richland Mall regularly and she said that people she spoke with felt it couldn't meet up to what S&S was and I think that left many of them disappointed.

S&S, by far, had the best cafeteria in town. My next favorite would have to be Morrison's back in the day. My Dad hated cafeterias in general. He said they reminded him of hogs being led to a trough.

What was the name of a cafeteria in town that was called sometings Buffet. Seems like it was Duffs Buffet or kind of like that. They had a large turntable going around that employees would keep stocking as customers removed food. I ate there once and felt the same way Homers Dad felt, Like I was in line with cattle.

There was a Duff's in Cayce and one on Decker in the mid 1980s.

Yeah, roughly that area. I can't say for sure it was the old Red Lobster location, but if not, it was one of the other larger buildings nearby.

I can count on one hand the times I've eaten at a cafeteria-type eatery. They weren't the most pleasant of experiences for me but I was able to have a decent experience with Picadilly at Columbia Place Mall once. One of my mom's former colleagues was with me and her and was the only reason we went (her son worked there at the time).
I know a lady that isn't keen on buffets because she feels like she has to fight for her food.

Man, Duff's was the worst. If all you wanted to do was get a belly full of grub for a cheap price it was fine. As I recall, everything was as bland as bland can be and all of the fried foods tasted like they were done in the same oil. I went there a few times with the crazy people I used to work with just to see who could dirty the most plates. Now that I look back at it, what the hell was I thinking????

The Duffs on Broad River Rd. wasn't all that good. It was like they had a rotating "trough" for all the people to grab what they could as it went round and round on that nasty turn stile. The building is still there as far as I know. I remember Duffs on Decker and I think there was one in West Columbia..but thank goodness they aren't around anymore.

At one time the Duff's on Broad River was a fitness center of some sort. Kind of ironic, ain't it??

The Duff's on Decker eventually became Olive Garden. It was not very good.
I remember the Sadies buffet at Woodhill, I got food poisoning there. This place was of no relation, but the name still makes me queasy.

and yet another question for inquiring minds...When Central Chevrolet moved from Gervais St to Beltline in the late 60's, did it eventually become Nix Volkswagon? or were they somewhere else?

@CayceKid--The old Lum's building turned into a Shrimper and then brunch places. It's listed i the Alphabetical Closings under "The Shrimper".

What was the name of the free standing hamburger place that was right across from the original What-A-Burger on Meeting Street? I don't remember . Also, does anyone remember or old enough to remember what the name of the little hamburger/hotdog stand building that was across from Tapp's and the Greyhound Bus Station? I cant remember the name of that either.

CK, there is a defunct bus station across from the What-a-Burger.

That other Hamburger place was sort of across the street from it, or maybe before you got to What A Burger..but I know it was there through the 70's..maybe early 80's? I never really paid it any attention..

Lizards Thicket has really started to suck in the last couple of years. Just like Sadies they open a can and dump it in a pot with no seasoning. - Bland Bland Bland.. Comptons Kitchen and the Just Us Cafe rock! -- Anybody agree?

I ate at Sadie's once shortly after it opened. I was disappointed with the food and never went back. They dolled out child sized portions. The hamburger steak perhaps could have filled a 5 year old but not a grown man. S&S had the cafeteria down to a science. I doubt that too many establishments can duplicate their success.

I work in the area and welcome something other than the China Max or the cold sandwiches at Andeli's.
Looks like its going to be a buffet. at 12:30 today, they were pretty crowded.

I ate at Sadie's a couple of times and the food was really bad. For restaurant that claimed to have homemade southern cooking it sure tasted like food that was frozen from a box.
