Blockbuster Video, 7249 Saint Andrews Road: December 2013 18 comments
Well, as we've discussed recently, Blockbuster, at least as a physical store, is on the way out. The parent company, Dish Network is shuttering the chain, basically, due to the rise of Internet video. The last Blockbuster movie rental, 'This Is The End', was on Saturday in Hawaii.
I'm not sure how long the clearance at the remaining stores will go on. It's possible this Irmo store is already closed, as these pictures were taken a week ago now, and I haven't been back by. This location joins a long list of Columbia area Blockbusters which have featured here. And Rosewood will be up as soon as I get the chance to get some pictures there.

UPDATE 12 February 2016 - As mentioned in the comments, this whole store has now been subdivided and re-purposed:
UPDATE 5 October 2020: Change name in post title from "Blockbuster" to "Blockbuster Video". Update tags, add map icon. Changing closing date from "Real Soon Now" to December 2013.

It looked like they were still open this afternoon. I need to go by there tomorrow, if I get a chance. The way the crowds were there after they announced the closings I know that if the have any videos left it's the crap no one will want! I heard that they are selling anything that isn't bolted to the floor....

Whatever DVD's they have left are now $4.99 and less. Last time I ventured in there (about a week ago) there were slim pickings to say the least. Nothing but older releases and stuff no one will ever buy.They even had a couple of VHS tapes!!

UPDATE - Everything that's left is $3.99 and less according to the signs in the windows. If I get a chance I may go by this weekend just to see what's left. Only 10 days until they are supposed to close the doors.

Well, it looks like they have closed on schedule. When I drove by there this evening it looked like people were in there packing up what didn't sell.

My bad - the new closing date is Dec. 20th. Drove through the parking lost this evening and they are down two just a few shelves of merchandise, probably nothing anyone wants...

The Blockbuster in West Columbia (US#1 and Dreher Road) that closed around the same time as this one (but hasn't featured here) is about to have a new Firehouse Subs move in...

It looks like Little Caesars is going to move into part of the building. There is a drive-thru that has been installed on the back of the building and the signage has been added to the post at the curb.
A couple of months ago it appeared that a company called Embroider Me was going to move there from their current location (I think Like Murray Blvd). But, recently the sign in the window has disappeared. They are carving the building up to make multiple storefronts.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see.....

Embroider-Me has their signage up in the building and Little Caesar's has all of their equipment installed. Looks like there will be one vacant store in between the two.

I noticed a couple of days ago that a finance company is moving in the vacant space between Embroider-Me and Little Caesar's. Can't remember the name, it was raining too hard to take a good look.

The turnaround on this one looks nice. I'm guessing most locals are preferring this look over the abandoned grey box.

@DM - they did a great job remodeling and re-purposing this building. I think it looks much better. Now I just need to go by there and grab a pizza one night.

From what I read this particular Blockbuster (which stood out as I came to associate with Homer feeling like it was only a matter of time before it closed soon) and the West Columbia location in Dreher Plaza (US#1 and Dreher Street) (which tonkatoy has had feelings comparable to Homer on) are both scheduled for December 15 closing dates...
The Rosewood location's last day has not yet been scheduled...
