Western Inn & Suites, 827 Bush River Road: Summer 2012 11 comments
I don't have a lot to say about Western Inn & Suites. It was a presence on Bush River Road near the I-26 interchange for years. Like the motel on the other side of Bush River near the same exit, it was a lesser known motel marquee, and probably pitched itself as a cheap stopover rather than a place to actually stay while in Columbia. That said, it did have a fairly nice looking (if very basic) pool, and its series of stairwells with circular cutouts are visually pleasing. The rooms seem to have been quite small (I did not inspect a "Luxury Room"), but I've definitely stayed in worse.
The place has already been sold, and is up for re-zoning. I meant to get a closer look at the zoning sign to see what is being proposed, but in the event I totally forgot about it.

Here's the scoop on this property. Right next door is an old KMart. A local church (NewSpring) bought the KMart and is remodeling it to be their new campus. They currently worship at 7830 Broad River (the old Gateway Baptist) but have outgrown it.
They also bought this hotel and they are going to raze it and make it into a parking lot, hence the re-zoning.
When the local deputies found out the church was going to raze the Western Inn, they celebrated due to the incredible amount of icky stuff that happened there.
NewSpring is expanding, and is a non-denominational evangelical church. You can read more about them if you're curious at http://www.newspring.cc. They've got campuses all over the state. Great church!

I remember times when you could see some of their 'permanent residents' walking up and down Bush River Rd. looking for their next night's rent.....wink wink!!!!

It was an Econolodge when I stayed there in 1988. It was the first hotel room my girlfriend and I got together.

This site was a Scottish Inn motel in 1974. I was transferred from Tuscaloosa, Alabama to Columbia in April 1974 to manage this property. It was not in very good shape when I got there and it was the last Scottish Inn I managed before I left the company several months later.

Interesting. At some point then, the flag for "Scottish Inn" moved across Bush River Road to 127 Morninghill Drive
