The Southern Skillet, 1213 Sunset Boulevard: April 2012 16 comments
Commenter south mauldin asks whether The Southern Skillet on Sunset Boulevard in West Columbia is closed.
I'm afraid the answer is: Yes. However, it appears that the owner, or perhaps the cook, has set up a new business in Cayce as described here and here, so all is not lost.

You're right, larry; I think it was some sort of Piza/Italian place.
Ted, is that antique store next to it still open? It was the same building, but the had rollup doors and was on the right end of the building (looking from the road).

It was called Sunset Restaurant before the Southern Skillet and served daily southern food like fried chicken, meatloaf and chicken and dumplings.

MB... That's it. the Sunset Restaurant had been there for years and also did breakfast. I only went once for breakfast, and it was just ok.
As for the "antique" store (it seemed more like a stationary yard sale), it has been gone for some time now. I think all that is left in that building is Queen's Quarters which is a mix of hair salon and gift store.

This was on my list of places to go b/c my brother liked it but never made it...I was eying Doza Rizen across the street (in a former Laundromat of all things) but never made it there, either.
Next to this, was the Hospice Care of Tri-County Thrift Store that closed some months ago.

I just checked the link on Ted's main post and it shows an address of 1301 State Street in Cayce. Looking on Google Maps, it appears that it's across from Brookland-Cayce High School.

Yeah, the Hospice thirft will be a post fairly soon. I wasn't sure about Doza -- there was a company van still out front though that was the only car there. I guess I'll go back and get some pix of that too. I had kind of wanted to go there. Dennis says the the linked restaurant has been there several years, but the Facebook and web page sure are angling it as a Southern Skillet folllow-on.

There was some kind of "Southern style" buffet in the State Street location a couple of years ago, but it wasn't open long, and there have been one or two other things in that location since then. The Southern Skillet might be related to the earlier buffet, but it has not been open continously with the same fare (and it might not have even been a restaurant during some of that time).

Vesta Paynter died last week. She ran The Drug Center in a small shopping center across from BC high school. Mrs. Paynter ran the store from 1947 until 1989 and it was a legendary institution in Cayce. I just thought I'd mention that if anyone had any Drug Center stories they would like to share. I've several to share but I can't right now as I'm traveling at the moment. Thanks

And just like that, the successor business, J. Patrick's Southern Kitchen at 1301 State St. has closed.

badger, was the greatest trick it ever pulled to convince people it didn't exist?

Mrs B's is opening in late July in this location. A southern cooking type place.

I will be visiting Sunset Boulevard next month. Does anyone know if the new restaurant will be open by then? Any idea as to what kind of dishes would be served?

This was something before the Southern Skillet (which I should remember but can't), and it seemed like a popular stop when political candidates would swing through the state. It had that perfect down-home look (wood paneling on the walls and red checked tablecloths) for the sound bites that showed the candidate was just plain folks. Ate at Southern Skillet once and it was very good southern cooking, and they seemed fairly busy the night I went - and it was actually right at closing and they kept everything going and hot even though it was a bit after closing. It's a shame to see them close but they're not the first to close there and lasted a lot less time than their predecessor.
