Josh's / Icy's Sports Bistro, 10005 Two Notch Road: May 2011   12 comments

Well, darn -- another "I'll get there someday" restaurant is gone. On the other hand, the menu at the follow-on operation, Polliwogs looks pretty good.

The LoopNet listing for the building says that the owner of Icy's was retiring rather than business being bad at this location. It also says the building was built in 1984, which is about what I remember. I recall a promising looking restaurant starting there (not Icy's, which this site claims dates to 2004) just about the time I left town to live in Fayetteville. As for Icy's itself, it seems to me it may have started at the much-restauranted sports bar outparcel at Columbia Mall and then migrated down Two Notch, but I'm not sure of that.

UPDATE 12 June 2011 -- Here's the original Columbia Mall location for Icy's:

Also added the name Josh's to the post title based on the comments.

  1. Ted, you are correct about Icy's originally being in the Columbia Mall outpost. I'm pretty sure they moved to this location in late 2006 or 2007.

  2. I am relatively certain that Icy's was in the building that is apparently currently Rookies sports bar (at 7167 Two Notch Rd) This location was Timmy G's before it was Icy's. Not sure if it was anything before Timmy G's. We used to go to Timmy G's quite often after playing softball at Polo Road. Im not sure when TG's became Icys, or when Icys moved...i dont live on that side of town :)

  4. For a short time, the "Rookies" place was called "The Loading Dock" after Icy's moved out.

  5. I used to go play the trivia at the Icy's in front of Columbia Mall. Even saw Xavier McDaniels in there one time. Good hole in the wall place. Went out to the one in this closing, but it was just too far out there.

  7. Icy's had two locations at one time. The original one is where Rookies is at the Columbia Mall. The other one was on Two Notch at Brickyard. It used to be called Josh's before it became Icy's.

  8. This building was Josh's restaurant/bar when it was new around 1985. The gang that I worked with rented out the whole place for a most memorable Christmas party once.

  9. OK, added some pix of the Columbia Mall building, and added "Josh's" to the post title.

  10. Part of the Icy's building at the Columbia Mall parcel I believe used to be Yogi Bear's fried chicken.

  11. The Columbia Mall location became Icy's in the early '90s. Somewhere around '93 or '94. I only know this because I remember remarking to my mom that we should try it and I was in middle school at Dent at the time, not realizing that it was a bar-type place. Icy's became a landmark for us for a long while and then we realized it moved. We were quite sad to see it go.

  12. Been a regular here for many years. It was Josh's originally, owned by the same people who owned Village Tavern on Berryhill. They looked much the same with the slanted wood paneling. Then Icy's opened her second location (while the one by Cola Mall was still open). The current owner was part of the management of this location and rebranded with the local food, beer, angle. It's done very well. Additionally, one of the owners responsible for Polliwogs was Mike King, his wife and he were killed by intruders in the Carribean a few years ago. Very tragic.
