Scorpio Massage Salon, 2210 Rosewood Drive: 1980s 3 comments
When a "massage salon" is open until 3AM, one suspects that the massages offered are very thorough. Certainly the late 70s (this ad is from the 1977 Southern Bell phonebook) seem to have been sort of a peak for such. Since then, this building on the south side or Rosewood just west of Pizza Man (and which was pretty clearly originally built as a home) has been a number of things. In particular I recall a record store, which a 1998 zoning board meeting characterizes as selling mostly religious CDs, and at present (though currently it is for sale at $325,000) it houses a recording studio which seems to have a number of telephone sidelines, so -- to reuse a bad joke, you can still reach out and touch someone.

I actually recall the Richland County Sheriff's department playing a positive role in ending Blue Laws. It seemed like the Sheriff decided they were stupid and were never going to change unless he enforced *everything*, even the stuff that usually got winked at. He did, and people got ticked off enough that the Blue Laws were (almost) gone within a few years.

Blue laws are still around. Richland County doesn't have them because they got over $900,000 in hospitality taxes. You get over thant in your county, the blue laws automatically go away.
Lexington County *just* missed making that number before the economy tanked.

It was the massage with the 'Happy Ending'. It probably cost a few dollars extra. I remember when massage parlors and Blue Law violators became the focus of the Sheriff's Department. When they weren't harassing swim suit shops and 15 year old clerks selling extension cords on the Sabbath, they could be found, undercover, doing their duty exposing the truth about the 'Happy Ending'. The troubling part was that the undercover cop would flash his badge after the 'Happy Ending' violation occurred. That is sort of like buying cocaine, snorting it, and then flashing the badge.
