Krispy Kreme / Thompson's Barbering & Hairstyling, 1514 Taylor Street: Spring 2020 10 comments
This old-school barber shop on Taylor Street is yet another casualty of COVID-19.
It appears they tried to stick it out, but in the end could not make it through the lockdown period.

UPDATE 3 September 2020: Commenter John R mentions that this storefront used to be a Krispy Kreme, so I have added that to the post title. I knew there was one somewhere around here. It used to be that when my aunt would come up from Jacksonville on the Silver Star, we would stop here to pick up warm doughnuts to eat while we waited and then continue down to the Seaboard station to meet her train (which would arrive fairly late at night).

If you mean the one called Hawthorne Service & Repair in these pictures, then no.
If you mean the one of the corner that is now Hawthorne Pharmacy, then yes.

My mother had to tow me along with her on every trip to Columbia when I was little. Shopping seemed to take all day but if I was patient & well behaved she always stopped by Krispy Kreme for a fresh box before the trip back home to Lexington. This was back in the early 1960s.
Have you ever been a little kid left alone on the back seat with a box of fresh hot Krispy Kremes? I have. I don't remember ever eating all of them but I always started with that goal in my little mind. Little boys always dream big.

The first Krispy Kreme in Columbia opened in February 1939 at 1422 Taylor Street near where Blue Sky’s Busted Plug sculpture is now. In October 1952 they moved a block east to 1516 Taylor Street across the parking lot entrance from Edens Food Store which became Taylor Street Pharmacy in 1956. A second location, 2548 North Main Street, opened in 1969 and was remodeled in 1981. The Main Street store became the main distribution center. At that point the Taylor Street store no longer made the product but sold donuts delivered from the North Main Street location. The Taylor Street store closed in 1983 and Taylor Street Pharmacy took over selling the donuts delivered from North Main. In 1992, the North Main Street location closed and the new facility at 1200 Knox Abbott Drive in Cayce became the main factory and distribution center for the Columbia area.

The building at 1514 Taylor Street was built in the mid-1940s and has housed a number of businesses since then, but not Krispy Kreme which was next door at 1516 Taylor Street from 1952 until 1983. Some of the businesses that have operated at 1514 Taylor Street are Richland Auto Supply, Industrial Finance, and Associates Loan Company. From 2001 until 2020, it was Thompson’s Barbershop.

Recall following church basketball games at the “Y” eating a dozen hot glazed doughnuts EACH with my buddy. His dad would buy them for us. Can’t eat more than one now!
