We'll stay with Decker Village for another closing. The store at the far right end of the plaza started as an Eckerd, transitioned into a Rite Aid and is now a Walgreen's.

This is the least Walgreen's looking Walgreen's in Columbia, and is the only one I can think of off the top of my head that is not a standalone building. To be fair, it wasn't a very Rite Aid looking Rite Aid either.

  1. While this may be a rare Walgreens, knowing a pharmacy's standard store would make a one other area store in Columbia stick out.

    CVS - Harden Street Extension

Let's also not forget that Eckerd ran a store without a pharmacy for years in Columbia Place Mall.

  2. Yeah, I remember that Mall Eckerd. I always thought that was very odd.

  3. I recall several of the malls around the Grand Strand having Eckerds with a mall.

  4. Speaking of Eckards at Columbia Mall, the few times I went in there when I worked at Belks, Penny's and Music Land out there, I always thought it had a Pharmacy. Then again, I never really paid all that much attention to it. I worked at that Mall from 1985 through 1990.

  5. @Justin -- hmm. I don't recall that. I am almost postitive there was nothing in Inlet Square like that, and while I didn't get to Myrtle Square Mall & Briarcliff Mall that often, I don't remember an Eckerd like that at either of those malls either.

Now I do recall that the main mall in Fayetteville NC had a pharmacy-less Eckerd..

  6. @Del- The Eckerd's at Columbia Mall was there because the Mall management made a sweetheart deal so that shoppers could have a place to buy aspirin. (No joke) Originally it did have a pharmacy, but after a couple of years it was taken out because it was losing money. (In fact the whole store turned out to be a money loser.)

@-Ted-There was an Eckerd at Myrtle Square Mall. It was to your immediate left when you entered the mal at the main entrance, right by its center court. I don' think Briarcliff had an Eckerd either.

  7. I may have misremembered Briarcliff, though I'm fairly sure there was a drug store of sometype down by where Kmart was, but it could be the Kmart itself I'm thinking of. Yes, agree with Tom, that's where I remember the Eckerd in Myrtle Square too.

  8. I have a recollection of Eckerd having a Richland Mall store at one point (≈mid-late 90s) but can't remember if it had a pharmacy or not...

As for this one, the biggest thing that stands out to me is that such Walgreens doesn't have a drive thru pharmacy making me wonder if they'll move to a nearby spot where they can build a building with one the way CVS has done with many of theirs (with the exception of one at 1013 Broad River Road which they wound up closing (and it has already featured here))...the other two locations (in addition to the one
at 3595 Harden Street Rashaad mentioned) that strike me in a similar fashion are one at 9712 Two Notch Road & 4711 Forest Drive...

  9. @Andrew- in the Richland Mall re-do, Eckerds was on the bottom level between Barnes & Noble and White's (Belk's). I think some children's theatre is now in the spot.

  10. I used to get my prescriptions filled at the Richland Mall Eckerd sometime around 2001 or 2002...I only remember this because the pharmacist there was such an incredibly nice man.
