The State says this store opened in January of 2016, giving it just a three year run. The company states they gave it a
thoughtful review process
which I take to mean it was losing money hand-over-fist given they could not have paid off the initial investment in that period and would, I suspect, have stayed if there were a reasonable prospect of doing so in the near term.
Given how long it has taken to re-purpose other buildings on Broad River Road, I see this building as an empty white elephant for years to come.

Like Tom I remember when this Walmart Neighborhood market opened. I have pics of the opening signage in fact...I shopped here a few times but I got to where I rarely go to Walmart as the last couple of times I've been the employees were pushing people to self-checkout with an attitude that left a lot to be desired.
It was only around for 3 years but in that time the following nearby grocers have folded up:
- BI-LO at Widewater Square became a Harvey's only to wind up closing (stemming from struggles parent company Southeastern Grocers faces)
- Save-a-Lot at 817 St. Andrews Road (I understand that this Walmart did a number on their business)
- Also the Family Dollar across the street recently closed(all 3 of the above mentioned spots have already featured here)
Another notable aspect of this post is that this features the day the Harbison Walmart finds itself out of commission because of a fire that is suspected to be the work of an arsonist (the 3rd local Walmart such has happened with in the last 5 years).
The intersection of Broad River & Beatty Road was upgraded when this Walmart went in and now it remains to be seen what will become of this building...I feel it's either going to get filled by year's end or it will stay vacant for a good number of years to come (it seems (to me) as if there is no in-between).

I never understood the concept.
People who buy groceries at the Big Box will still buy at the Big Box.
People who only care about convenience will buy at the closest grocer.
People who want the full high-end grocery experience will still go to Whole Foods, Fresh Market, etc.
People who want the full grocery experience at a discount price will go to Aldi or Lidl.
I can't imagine anyone going out of their way to get to a WMT Neighborhood Market.

This particular grocery store served quite a few residents of local apartment complexes who did not have transportation to drive anywhere else. It is most unfortunate for them and other residents of St. Andrews because now there is no other grocery store within walking distance.

Theft by employees and customers was a major factor for closing as that caused big losses each year. In fact several employees and customer have been arrested due to this issue.

The theft issue appears to be the real issue for closing. This I've been told by Walmart employees at other nearby Walmarts. If that's true I question where was Walmart's Loss Control Department in handling this? I think that was the reason, as every time I was there it was very busy, all too often unable to get a shopping cart. Sad!

I love the Neighborhood Market, in Cayce, I do agree, with the person above, they push you to use self-checkout. I have no desire to do that.

I went there when it first opened and was pleasantly surprised as it was nicer than what I expected it to be. The selection was not the greatest, but it was a place I could get in and out of quite quickly.
As time went on I noticed a gradual decline. Shelves were not as well stocked, the number of employees dropped and the checkout lines got longer. Once I waited in line for 20 minutes because they only had one cashier. (She told everyone else had called out and they could not find anyone else.) I also noticed an increase in panhandlers in the parking lot and around the building.
BTW, The State alod said it was closing because it was "under performing."
