I did not know this, but Crazy 8 was part of Gymboree, with the second bankruptcy of that chain taking out these stores as well.

According to Wikipedia:

Crazy 8 was started in August 2007. It features lower priced clothing and is Gymboree's direct competitor for The Children's Place and Old Navy.

In the event, I guess that didn't work out too well.

  1. You're gonna get arthritis from these posts, with all the retail shops closing the next 12 months.

  2. There is no retail apocalypse. The media is just reporting companies that knew their outcome would end here with their continued embracing of debt.

  3. I was at Sandhills just yesterday thinking how much that place has gone to hell. There's probably more places for rent there than there are stores anymore.

  4. Sandhill was built at exactly the wrong time.

  5. Sandhill has a lot of retail spaces that have never been built out or occupied.

Part of the problem was timing. The second is that Kahn no longer owns a majority of the Town Center part of the retail center, and the current owners have done nothing to spruce it up or entice tenants to rent in the "town center" portion. Little things like the holiday decorations are sun faded and worn, yet the current owners put them up year after year. Details like this make a difference to customers. No one wants to go to an area they perceive as neglected.

However, there is plenty of customer traffic in much of the rest of the development. The Fashion Drive/Two Notch intersection is a nightmare at most hours simply because of volume.

  6. Richland Mall or whatever it's called now is about as useless as anything too. It did better through the early 1980's before the original one was torn down and that waste of space was built in its place. Columbia itself has never been more than it is..but since the Malls came around and other areas were built, downtown is just a shell of it's former self. But dont worry, USC will buy up all the buildings and things and turn them into condos or something for their 100 million students that attend and go there.

  7. The main reason for the downfall of Sandhill was the planning. Kahn built Sandhill before he had occupants in a lot of the spaces. He had taken out a loan so large for the mall that he couldn't even pay in back in a timely manor with all the occupants that were there at one point. He now only owns the center on Sandhill. The rent there is now so high because of this. Sandhill developed into a hell hole after most of it foreclosed. It was supposed to be so much more developed than this. All these banks and other stores your see on the outskirts were never supposed to be there. Its honestly really sad.
