Yogi Bear's Honey Fried Chicken, Two Notch at Parklane: 1960s?   22 comments

Commenter Dennis sends this picture noting:

There was a Yogi Bear's at the corner of Two Notch & Decker. Where K-Mart's parking lot is.

This sign is actually in Hartsville, and the store there is about the last one in the US. The one in Columbia had a sign identical to this one.

I don't recall this place in Columbia; I know several things have come onto that K-Mart corner though. The one in Hartsville I have seen many times -- we drive by it on the way to visit our cousins there. I believe they still prefer the chicken there over other larger brands like KFC and Church's.

UPDATE 22 June 2010 -- I get a lot of hits looking for Yogi Bear's Honey Fried Chicken. Just for fun, here are two pictures (like Dennis's above) from what I believe is the last Yogi Bear's still in operation. It's located in Hartsville South Carolina at 514 South 5th Street:

UPDATE 11 August 2022: Added the new picture at the top of the post which was sent in by Jimmy Freeman who says: "[ ] as you can see...... it was located in Winn Dixie shopping center next to that bank. When Columbia Mall was built, Winn Dixie was moved". This is actually a bit differently located than I had remembered it. Big thanks to Jimmy!

I'm also adding a map icon based on the location of Baker's Sports Pub, which seems to be pretty close to where this was.

  1. Yogi Bear's was located in the little strip mall where Winn-Dixie was, next to the W-D on Two Notch Rd, aprroximately halfway between the road and where Sears now stands. The sports bar (or at the least the front half) was the restaurant and was moved in the 70s when Columbia Mall was built.

YBHFC was part of a regional chain. The sign at the Columbia location was not the same as the Hartsville sign. It featured Yogi running away with a picnic basket.

Incidently, it featured the best fried chicken I ever ate.

  2. Tom - you're right, the sign was different. I remembered as soon as I read your comment.

  3. the Hartsville Yogi Bear is the last one in the franchise. Last I heard is that while there is KFC and Zaxbys in Hartsville, Yogi Bear is still the favorite there. (the only Churches in Hartsville are the ones open on Sunday)

  4. The old Yogi Bears chicken building is still in it's original location on two notch. It is roughly across the street from Church's chicken. The same building that was occupied by Icy's Sports Bar.

  5. I remember it being where the ICY's Bar is also. Does anyone remember Tripps Fried Chicken on Decker? Or Dino's on Decker? I remember going to those places all the time when I was a kid.

  9. I remeber tripps Fried Chicken it was an more like a Zestos where u would walk up place an order and leave with your chicken. It was at the end of a strip that had jack's Barber shop and the Seven Eleven. As for Dino's it's still there...last time I went had to be roughly nine years ago...different owners and had a C rating on the door.

  10. So the original building to YBHFC is still there? I do remember the BIG statues/figures of Yogi, Boo-Boo and Mr. Ranger running after Yogi. Does anyone remember also the place near there that you could ride the ponies and sort of a feed/seed outdoor place? I dont remember it's name though.

  11. Del, I think it was called Lee's Pony rides. They also ran a fireworks stand on the 4th and New Years.

  13. If Icy's sport bar is the original building, they need a remodel. I passed by there the other day and thought how raggedy the building looks. Especially the roof over the patio area.

  14. I do remember a yogi-bear friend chicken at the intersection of two notch rd and shakespere rd in the Dentsville section of columbia sc in the middle 1960's, because my father installed refrigeration in that small restaurant. The sign had a yogi bear running with a picnic basket. the restaurant was located right next door to a half moon shaped brick building which belonged to a church. If anyone recalls please reply.

  16. I think the building was moved from its original location a block or so to where it is now.

  17. I remember eating at a YBHFC in Georgetown, SC, when my father would take me on work-related trips from Charleston upstate sometimes. I remember it was in same town as big paper mill that used to sponsor a kids football team named the "Steelers." I played on the Mt. Pleasant team in 1974 that played them one year. They had their own bus! Unbelievable. Anyway, this YGHFC was sort of attached to another building, I think a motel. We used to pick up a basket or two and head to some state park to eat. I remember the bees would be all over that box as soon as we pooped the lid!

I know there isn't one in Georgetown anymore and wondered if anyone remembered that one. This sign brought back a few memories.

  18. @ Jack I've always heard you'll attract more..... Anyway, I can see you attracting bees what with the honey fried chicken, but maybe more flies with what you did on the lid! lol

  19. If they are still using their original recipe, then it's no wonder they're still in business. Colonel Sanders tried to buy that recipe - seemed that he liked it more than his own - but the owner wouldn't sell it to him. This was before the Colonel hit it big with KFC.

  22. Thanks Ted for adding the picture I sent you. The picture shows the "Yogi Bear" sign is located in Winn Dixie shopping center but I am not 100% sure if it was actually located in the center or a stand alone building next to it. I was very young, only remember it being located between Winn Dixie and Piggly Wiggly
