I first knew this storefront as Silver City Comics back when I was in college in the 80s. I know they were there as late as 1997, so I'm not sure when $2.49 moved in, but it's been a good number of years. I noticed the other week that they are gone and the place is now a Latin (but apparently not Mexican) restaurant.
UPDATE 6 April 2017 -- Hmm apparently I did this post and it was one of the ones that vanished in the database crash. I see it in the wayback machine, and will try to bring in those pictures later. I also see there that they moved from "$2.49" to "$2.79" before moving, so I'm updaing the post title with the higher price and "moved".

I was hired as a counter clerk here in the early 2010s. I had done it before at another dry-cleaning place. You run the cash register, put tags on clothes, sort them however. A no-nonsense, part-time, minimum wage job.
On my first day of work, I was ten minutes EARLY and the owner was almost shouting. She thought I wanted to clock in early every day and build up extra time on my paycheck. As if I could get rich by doing this. I've always arrived at work 5 - 10 minutes early, and I am always ready to start working immediately.
She informed me that she owned the two spaces on either side of the drycleaning business. She was planning to open a coffee shop and a thrift/consignment store. I would be required to work at all three of these businesses for the same pay. Any cafe or restaurant can be hectic enough without having two other jobs. Even if you have experience in the restaurant business - I didn't - and actually applied to work at one - she was springing this on me.
She also told me to drive around and take pictures of items at stores, so I could send them to her phone and she could decide what to buy.
At another point in the day, she was busy talking to police officers about something that happened nearby (they wanted to know if she had seen anything). I had a question about how to do something. A customer walked in. She told me that THE CUSTOMER could show me how to do it. He looked quite uncomfortable and said he could not help me.
I am not surprised that this place closed, and the two other businesses never opened.

Latin food? Okay, So... for the most part, with the exception of Sofritos, Empanadas, Flan and a few others, we're talking about Mexican food.
