This Shoney's on Garners Ferry Road is closed for remodeling. I used to eat there now and again when I worked out on Bluff Road. It was a typical Shoney's with a decent salad bar and burgers. I'm not sure exactly what the remodel will entail. Newer Shoney's stores are bigger and boxier, but it doesn't look yet like they plan to tear down the existing building.

The chain has been in trouble for years now, and we have lost a number of locations in the Columbia area. Apprently the stress of COVID-19 combined with marginal sales anyway were enough to close this branch down, at least until people head back to restaurants in greater numbers.

  1. It will be a miracle if it opens back up. They are going the way of Ryan's

  2. I have read about how CEO David Davodpour has sought to implement strategies to turn Shoney's around so I think it's possible but I think it's a wait and see situation...I don't want to wish him any ill but he does have his work cut out for him based on the number of Shoney's that have folded since the late 90s...

  4. @Midnight - if you happen to go there let me know how it looks and how the food is. That goes for anyone else as well.....

  5. I hit the breakfast bar this morning and they have new tile flooring and updated counters. The same worn booths are there and the food options are the same as before. I was really hoping they would expand the food items to match Shoney's in other areas that have a more impressive spread.

  6. @Joe - that's what I was afraid would happen. Sounds like putting lipstick on a pig.

  7. Yeah, this place opened for about 20 minutes post-COVID before re-closing. The Lizard's Thickets have done a similar thing (close some locations while actively directing you to an operating restaurant). Could this be a staffing thing--temporarily closing lower-traffic and/or smaller places to ensure the top stores have a sufficient number of employees?
