As I was driving down Laurel Street the other day, I noticed that American Business Machines at the corner of Laurel & Sumter had moved. According to their sign, they are now at 406-D Williams Street, which seems to be somewhere down by the new USC baseball stadium.

Their sign and google suggest that ABM is a typewriter shop, but I doubt there is much business in that now, and the one time I stopped by, I was looking for bulk shredding services.

  1. Back in the early eighties I was a member of a business here in Columbia called "The Trade Exchange".
The Trade Exchange would allow any privately owned business to join. The Trade Exchange was a barter business. Any member could go to another member and trade with them. But a business did not have to trade with that exact business. The trade exchange worked sort of like a bank, for example, if a member came to my stereo shop and wanted a stereo, I would sell it to them and the cost was credited to my Trade Exchange account and deducted from their account.
I then had money in the bank, so to speak, to go to any other member and get something using the amount that had been credited. The business that I got something from would then have their account credited the amount of the item I got and my account would be reduced by that amount.

I used the Trade Exchange to buy the sign that was put up in front of my stereo store on Two Notch, $4000.00.
I then had to allow other member to get stuff from me equaling 4 grand. I always marked the items up pretty high, but I imagine other members did the same thing.

Now, the reason I'm telling you all this is because if I remember correctly, American Business Machines was also a member, But.. maybe not, I just seem to remember because I got a micro cassette recorder from them, I believe it was them, that I used to record memos. I used to do my best thinking about how to make money when I was sitting on the crapper in the early hours before work or while driving into work, and that what I used the micro cassette recorder for. I used it for something else one time but... can't say here what it was. Use your imagination, if you get it right I might suggest that you did. WHew! that wore my two fingers I type with out.
