Piggly Wiggly ("The Social Pig"), 3818 Devine Street: 28 March 2025 3 comments
This closing was first mooted back in 2020, I think, with Lidl speculated to be the next tenant. In the event, the owners of this Piggly Wiggly had time remaining on their lease and elected not to go anywhere.
Now the lease has ended, and apparently the property owners did not want to renew. This store, often called The Social Pig because Shandon neighbors often ran into each other here closed on 28 March.
This location is not particularly close to me, so I did not stop in that often over the years, but the few times I did, it was fine, and I got what I needed.
It's unclear to me whether Lidl is in fact moving in, but for now probably the Food Lion at Devine & Fort Jackon Boulevard is probably the closest non-specialty grocery.
You can read about the closing here & here, and the store's farewell message is on their Facebook along with the note that store fixtures are to be sold off on 15 April.

Piggly Wiggly, 3818 Devine Street: 8 November 2014 (Ownership Change) no comments
The Devine Street Piggly Wiggly recently changed ownership as noted in a story in The Columbia Star, which you may or may not be able to read here. With all the churn engulfing The Pig recently, it's good to see one store hang on.
In this case, the managers of the former Garners Ferry store have bought Devine Street outright:
The 35,000-squarefoot store closed late last Sunday for an inventory, reopening Monday under the new owners. Miller says customers are unlikely to notice many changes early on. He said the store has been well maintained, but he expects some refurbishing and painting ahead.
“Piggly Wiggly has gone back to its roots as a group of independently owned Piggly Wiggly stores joined by a common brand, collaborative marketing, and the flexibility of individual ownership,” said David Schools, president and CEO of Greenbax Enterprises, Piggly Wiggly Carolina’s parent.
Put that way, it sounds a bit like IGA.
