This WLTX story basically says that Bi-Lo had to close this Reid's to get right with the FTC. If that's accurate and not just an excuse, it seems dreadfully wrong-headed for the feds to mandate throwing people out of work.

It also seems a bit askew that Bi-Lo is going on an acquistion spree. I guess that going bankrupt was a better strategy for them than honoring obligations has been for the other chains.

  1. My Mother in law shopped at this Reid's often. I have never shopped at a Reid's.
The way she talked, it was "the best place to buy groceries". They "have everything" and the prices "are better than other stores."
But, she also told me it was a store owned by Food Lion.
After reading Ted's comment referring to BI-LO, now I wonder.
My Mother in law has been wrong about a WHOLE LOT of things, so I should know by now.

What's the difference between outlaws and a mother in law?
    Outlaws are wanted.
Oohhhh.... Damn I hope my Ma in law doesn't see this.

I went into a drug store and asked the pharmacist for some arsenic. The pharmacist said "I can't sell you arsenic, why do you want arsenic?"
I pulled out a picture of my mother in law and showed it to him, he said "Well, why didn't you tell me you had a prescription."

I guess if I'm gonna die I might as well go down in flames.

  2. I only made it in this Reid's twice but liked it the times I went.

Frankly I don't drive down this stretch of Charleston Highway much but I did enjoy the seasonal billboards that Reid's utilized that was along Charleston Highway between I-26 and Old Dunbar Road.

I've also felt that Reid's brought new life into Cayce Commons and really hope that someone can come along and fill the void.

Rick's mother-in-law is actually right about it being owned by Food Lion. From what I've gathered, Food Lion's parent company Delhazie sold it off to Bi-Lo and with the one within walking distance at Edenwood Plaza I think it sadly meant that this Reid's had to go. The times I made it in I noticed they carried Food Lion brands and utilized Food Lion's MVP card. I frankly felt that Reid's was a step above Food Lion overall.

The WLTX article linked in the main post states that the Reid's in Batesburg/Leesville will become a KJ's Market IGA and it makes me wonder what will happen to this one. That's my first choice given what I've read about them taking the former Food Lion at Richardson Plaza (543 St. Andrews Road) earlier this year. I also think Publix is a possibility though I think this is slightly smaller than the average Publix.

I've also been reminded in recent days of an 8th grade classmate of mine who moved here from Texas (I think she was from the DFW metroplex) and she was surprised to find out Food Lion still existed because she remembers issues with their meat lead them to closing up shop where she was from.

  3. @Andrew - I remember when Food Lion had an issue with their meat.
I believe they would take meat that was almost out of date and re-date it, or something like that.

Until 2003 I bought most of our groceries at Food Lion, when I moved to another house in 2004, I quit shopping at Food Lion because it was to far away from where my new house is.
I have found another store that I enjoy much better.

  4. I hope that Bi-Lo will try to find a place for all of the employees to go; other than the unemployment line.

  5. @Rick - the in-law joke had me LMAO!! I'll save you a seat in hell...lol. How about this oldie...

A woman was shopping at her local supermarket where she selected:
    a half-gallon of 2% milk,
    a carton of eggs,
    a quart of orange juice,
    a head of romaine lettuce,
a 2 lb. can of coffee,
and a 1 lb. package of bacon.

As she was unloading her items on the conveyor belt to check out, a man standing behind her watched as she placed the items in front of the cashier.

While the cashier was ringing up her purchases, the man calmly stated, "You must be single."

The woman was a bit startled by this proclamation, but she was intrigued by the man's intuition, since she was indeed single.

She looked at her six items on the belt and saw nothing particularly unusual about her selections that could have tipped off the man to her marital status.

Curiosity getting the better of her, she said "Well, you know what, you're absolutely correct. But how on earth did you know that?"

The man replied, "Cause you're ugly."

  6. Homer the WLTX article linked in the main post indicated that Bi-Lo was seeking to find open positions within other Bi-Los for the displaced employees. The thing of it is, most supermarkets have enough turnover that those that intend to remain with Bi-Lo shouldn't have much trouble finding a way to do so.

  10. Does anyone remember a par 3 golf course on Garners Ferry Road where the Super Wal-Mart is now?
It was called Cedar wood Golf Course. They had a driving range that me and my posse would go to after having a few beers, great fun.

  11. The aforementioned golf courses predated me but my grandmother remembers the site of what is now Rosewood Center (redeveloped in 2002 to feature Publix) having a golf course as I recall...

I remember around that time her and I having discussions as to how the quality of Rosewood was undergoing a massive improvement...now if someone can find a home in the former KFC it'd be another positive step in that direction (I currently envision a Zaxby's) for Rosewood.

  12. @Andrew - Whenever I hear Rosewood mentioned, the first thing that comes to my mind is all the clubs that were there in the 60's, 70's and 80's.
Me and my posse (Wife included) went to all of them, bar hopping as we called it.
That was back when I could work all day and party all night, that's probably what is wrong with me now.
And thinking about what may be wrong with me now, I say that because my wife tells me, "something is wrong with you." Maybe there is nothing REALLY wrong, It's just that I have not changed and she has, you know, she grew up, I didn't.
Maybe I'm a little slower, maybe I don't stay up as late as I once did, But I'm pretty much the same guy she married. She liked who I was then.
I don't think anything is wrong, now that I think about it.
I think maybe I have stayed the same, she has changed, and that makes her think it's me.
Hmm..... Maybe there is something wrong with her.
Women.... What can you do? Answer: Nothing, that will make 'em happy for any length of time.

  14. This Reid's was my favorite grocery store. The aisles were more open than other store and I could use my Food Lion MVP card. Then Reid's was sold to Bi-Lo and they chose to close this location even though this store was much better and easier to get in and out of than the Bi-Lo down the road.

Then Bi-Lo sold the store down the road to Food Lion so basically what happened is that Food Lion moved from the better location at Reid's and went down the street to a worse store in about seven years time.
