Rising High Natural Bread Company, 1508 Main Street: 30 Apr 2008 5 comments
The Free Times reports the closing of the last Rising High store on 30 April.
As I said in my post on the Harden Street location, Rising High seemed like it would be the kind of place I would like, but for some reason, I never warmed up to it. I never ate at the Main Street location but one commenter says it had been going downhill for a while. Here's a review from an out-of-towner that seems to say the same thing.
I hope something goes in there though; I would hate another empty storefront on Main.
UPDATE 16 July 2009: Added 'Natural Bread Company' to the post title so as to give the full name of tthe place. Added the street address. Added a link to a review from back in the day.

I'm hearing they really are going to renovate it and re-open after construction is done. Knowing the owner, I'm guessing they'll give them a big break to stay.

Rising High was always my favorite sandwich shop in Columbia, never quite understood why they couldn't keep them going. I guess the restaurant fight for the lunch dollars is quite fierce in Columbia!

This place really did go downhill. It hasn't been good for years. The service was not good at all, and the food was never all that for the price. It just wasn't done with excellence. Never could hold a handle to Jammin' Java down the street -- even though that went significantly downhill as well before it closed.

As a former employee of the Main Street Rising High, I can tell you from firsthand experience that the restaurant went downhill fast. When I first started, around 2003, we had a great crew who cared about their jobs. The food was high quality as well. Slowly the good employees began to leave and were replaced by knuckle-heads who didn't give a damn about the customer or other employees. We got a new district manager who was out of touch with the way restaurants should be run. The company began ordering lower quality processed meats and cheeses. Eventually when I quit around 2005, I knew the restaurant was on the way out. Too bad, really.

The inside of this place was a stunning, and pleasant, surprise the first time I set foot there. I sincerely hope that the classily-exposed ductwork and high ceilings are preserved by whatever moves into this space.
