W. J. Keenan High School, 3455 Pine Belt Road: 2008? (moved)   10 comments

According to this Columbia Star story, opened in 1963, which means that it has been there most of my lifetime. It didn't really occur to me that I hadn't really seen any school traffic there recently until I cut through Pine Belt one day and noticed all the construction going on.

I kept meaning to go over and take some pictures, but with one thing and another I didn't until this Sunday, when most of the Keenan signage was already gone. It's interesting that there seems to be a rather large auditorium but I can't ever recall going to anything there while we went to various productions at Dreher High School auditorium fairly frequently. Construction at the new school site, 361 Pisgah Church Road started in 1 June 2005. I'm not sure when they actually started using the new building, but clearly they did not use the old one for the 2009 school year.

Sanders Middle school is slated to move into the old Keenan building on 6 July 2009.

  1. I live near there and travel on Pinebelt almost every day. The last year that students attended Keenan was the 2006-2007 school year. That was my voting precinct and I remember voting in the democratic primary in January 2008 and our voting location was moved to Bradley. Can't remember exactly when construction commenced.

Also, I do recall at least one big production in the theater not too long before Keenan moved -- I was Ricland Mall and a bunch of teens in their costumes were handing out fliers for a production of Grease.

  2. I should've said I think 06-07 was last year -- I just know that in Jan 08 the school was closed and my voting precint changed.

  3. I attended Keenan from 1964 to 1967 in grades 7 - 9. It was built to be a junior high and the big excitement at the time was that it was air-conditioned! Unheard of back in the mid-60's. We got to choose the mascot and it was the Kestrel, which we were told was a baby falcon. The Falcon was the mascot of A.C. Flora, the high school we could not wait to attend.

  4. They use to hold the district 2 high school beauty pageants at this auditorium back in the 80's and early 90's.

  9. @ted, you may want to do some research into the old WG Sanders Middle School at 136 Alida St. It has been recently torn down, but after Sanders initially moved to the old Keenan building, it stood for quite some time. I'm unsure if it was vacant or used for something else, but judging by the Google Street View and Apple Maps, the former is more likely.

  10. Keenan JUNIOR High School: I attended 1963-1966. We didn't all end up going to Flora (like me); some went to Columbia. David Wertz, Coach Weathers, Mrs. Pack (biology), Mrs. Sjoberg, Ms. Bruce Spigner... loved you all, once I grew up and learned to appreciate it.
