Commenter Gypsie puts this demolition down to the ongoing Interstate construction, and it would be the closest part of the property to the highway, but I haven't found any news stories about it. The building was in Browning Business Center, and was at one point ITT Technical Institute as you can see here. I don't know much about Southeastern Institute, other than their website is still online, but totally blank, but apparently it was a healthcare trade school as described in this superpages listing.

  1. Prior to these occupants it was an Operations Center for South Carolina National, and then Wachovia Bank. I would say up through 1999 at least. I worked there from 1989 to 1995. This front part, with the nice glass "atrium" was a cafeteria that served employees. The nice old "lunch ladies" in that kitchen made some good food, including the best ham & cheese grilled sandwich I have had at that point, and since.

  3. Back in the late '90s I worked at a sandwich shop that used to deliver a lot to a few employees here when it was the Wachovia operations center. I remember how nice those employees always were and they were always really good tippers too.

  4. Gypsie - would that sandwich shop have been “steak out” by chance?

  5. I remember going to the building to have my fingerprints taken when I started working at Wachovia. At the time they processed the checks there since the Columbia Federal Reserve was next door at the time. I remember the canteen having a sealed of indoor smoking area since folks could not go outside to smoke for security reasons.

  6. Wow. I also used to work there from 1993-2000. So many memories. You felt special if you were able to grab a parking space outside the gate. I remember walking work over to the Federal Reserve that was next door. The cafeteria did have tasty food at a reasonable price. I used to go to work early to grab a bite before my shift started. My friends and I also had takeout delivered from Steak-out, Red Checkers, and Blimpies. So many memories of my early adult years.

  7. Crystal - I bet we knew each other. I don't remember Red Checkers, but I did forget that Blimpies used to deliver there too. I think they closed a few years ago.

@Ted You've got a closing on a different Steak Out at the link below, but I think the one that serviced this location was near "real mexico" on Bush River Road (if not IN that building).

  8. My recollection is that the building that where Real Mexico (2421 Bush River Road) is now was split where on one side it had the Steak Out Brian remembers and on the other side it had a Sunbeam bread shop...I remember being in Sunbeam a couple of times but I never set foot in the Steak Out.

Steak Out wound up moving to St. Andrews & Woodland Hills for a while after a gas station closed (I do NOT remember what it was called) and that is the one that Brian said did feature here and the chronology is mentioned there a little further...

  9. @Brian -- Red Checker was a little sandwich shop located in the Palmetto Gold & Pawn strip mall on Broad River.

@Andrew -- The St. Andrews location of Steak Out was previously a 7-Eleven.

  10. @Andrew - I believe you are right on all points above, as I remember it the same now that you've said it.
