U-Haul Moving & Storage, 156 Jamil Road: August 2021 4 comments
It was a very unpleasant, rainy day, so I did not get out of the car and try to get better pictures, but this U-Haul storage facility was acquired by the SC Department of Transportation as part of their ongoing effort to widen I-26 and the renters, as reported by commenter Gypsie, were requested to be out by August of 2021.
I confess I don't really understand how this property will be affected by the I-26 work. It is on the far side of Jamil Road from the Interstate, and unless the road is to be closed, at least in part, I don't see how they use the property -- especially with new construction on the *near* side of the Interstate.

UPDATE 16 August 2023 -- As noted in the comments, this place is being razed:

I think the part that is most confusing is the way some places on that stretch of road will be staying put, but others (like U-Haul) were closed. It's just hard to get a visual idea of what it's going to look like.

There was a small fire in one of the units just to the left of what used to be the office/living quarters last night. The damage can easily be seen from the road. I'm guessing something was left unattended or otherwise carelessly used by one of the many homeless people who have set up camp in the units since the place was shut down. I feel like the powers that be had to know this kind of thing would happen and they should have gone ahead and bulldozed the place once we were all forced to move our belongings elsewhere. Perhaps now they will do exactly that, but I won't be holding my breath.

They have finally started tearing down the structures on this location. Thank goodness. It had become a huge eye sore because all the people that were living in it were just trashing the hell out of it. And frankly that makes no sense to me at all.

What is going on is that Jamil Road will need to be shifted to accommodate a wider I-26. That whole stretch, from this to where Carmax is will be impacted however my understanding of the details are still hazy (and each property will be a different story).
The same sort of thing is due to happen along Fernadina Road (same stretch along the other side of the interstate) however it seems like every time I encounter SCDOT's plans for the area it seems like they've tweaked something.
