Well, I had written a few paragraphs about the State Fair, mainly lamenting the demise of the Steel Building, had got it posted and even had a comment on the post when my whole database went *Kaflooey*!. Enjoy these pictures of the State Fair while I try to get back to a somewhat normal state..

UPDATE 28 October 2015

OK, I'm not going to be able to find the original text in google cache, so the post went something like this:

It turns out 2014 was the end of an era, though I didn't know it at the time. This year, the Steel Building which has been a central focus for the Fair for all of my life was gone. In its place is an open plaza called Hampton Plaza, this year the site of an animatronic exhibit called Enter The Dinosaurs. The function of the Steel Building has been largely picked up by a new building at the South wall called the Goodman Building. It houses many, though not all, of the exhibits and vendors typically in the Steel building, but seems designed to be slightly more upscale. The Cantey Building has been extensively reconfigured for the Art exhibit, and is now much better lit (and the upstairs arcade is unused). The flowers have moved across the corridor from the Ellison Building to the Cantey Building and most of the agricultural exhibits have made the opposite move.

Anyway, if you've followed my Fair posts, you know the kind of thing I like, and these pictures are more of it.

I'll also note that the Televac 86000 handwriting computer is still gone..

  2. I didn't even go to the fair this year.
Maybe I'm growing tired of it.
I've been so many times over the years it got to be where it seemed like "the same old thing" anymore.
Maybe after paying $100.00 overall to park, entrance fee and getting something to eat, which can't be helped the way the food smells, I just could not bring myself to spend the money.
I WILL NOT ride any rides, I don't like getting ripped off playing the games, the exhibits are pretty much always the same, can't buy beer inside anymore, the hoochie koochie shows are gone and besides the fact I don't like crowds, why would I go?

Back in 1983 I had a friend that I went to the fair with.
We were both in our 20's and I always gave him a rash of shi* about still living at home with his Mom.
It cost 25 cents to page someone to meet you at the 'Rocket',
I gave the girl five bucks and told her every 2 minutes to page my friend and say "Meet your mother at the rocket"
He got so pissed off I thought he was going to slug me.

  3. First time I've gone since 2012, and I felt the fair seemed so much smaller or had less than in years past. I never ride the rides but I still had fun with the exhibits although some seemed a bit lacking.

  4. I've noticed how the fair seemed smaller.
I've also noticed how a lot of things seem smaller as I grow older. The first time I noticed this phenomenon was one day I decided to go check out my old grade school, as I walked around looking in the windows, the cafeteria was so much smaller than I remembered it. The classrooms were also smaller than I remembered.
I went by my old kindergarten and it was the same, smaller than I remembered.
    I wonder why that is?

  5. Yeah, my impression is that the Steel Building stuff downsized a few years ago, and that carried over to the new building. Fewer of the quirky booths, and no gray market videos or handwriting computer.

I think someone commented last year that the rates for building space at the Fair had gone way up and priced a number of people out.

  6. How about the livestock exhibits? Do they seem to have downsized as well? Do they still have the ducking slide?

  7. Duckling slide......geez....

  8. I kind of wanted to see if the duck slide was still there (I'm always surprised that nobody has made them stop it yet), but in the event my feet hurt and I didn't feel like dealing with the smell at the time since I was about to get food so I didn't go back there.

  9. Duckling slide still there. Highlight of the whole thing for my father and daughter who were both first time visitors of the fair. The guy sitting with the slide kept falling asleep while we were there. All in all I thought the fair as a whole was pretty disappointing. Less interesting things to see (I hadn't been in several years) and couldn't locate foods mentioned in the newspaper. Looked at everything including rewalking some areas looking for the food and still made it out in less than two hours for the lunch token offer.
