Goatfeathers, 2017 Devine Street: 31 May 2014 14 comments
I'm afraid Goatfeathers is another Columbia institution (30+ years) I let slip by without a visit. The place closed on 31 May as the owner retired to Hawaii.
All the signage and displays are still up however, and The Free Times says it might re-open someday.

This post about Goats makes me realize I have been totally out of touch. Having lived in Columbia all of my 57 years and traveling Devine Street many times, I was not familiar with Goat Feathers until this post.
I partied well, and I mean WELL, from 1975 until 1989 and I have never been to Goats.
I partied at what I thought were all the great places in town. I need to rethink if I actually hit all the spots that were my kind of place over the past 30 years.
Anyway, to late. BI-LO is more of a party stop for me now.

To take my last post further, I'm not out of touch, I'm an idiot. I've worked my ass off for the past 45+ years and I'm still working my ass off. For What? I should retire to Hawaii.
I just had my house appraised to refinance, to hell with that I'm going to sell and live in a little shack on Maui, A hammock under a palm tree, a cold adult beverage with a little umbrella sticking out of the glass, hula girls. I'll touch base with all when I get there, if I can afford internet, if you don't hear from me, Aloha.

@Cam -- nope. I did work military contracts for years, but I think I picked up the date affectation before that. I *did* pick up some terms like "low hover", "wrapped around the axle" and "OBE" during those years..

Rick - my dream has always been to open up a little beachfront bar on Key West. Have Jimmy Buffet over every week to do a little Havana Daydreamin' and such.

After visting Homer's place in Key West (should it open), you can catch a ride out of the Key West International Airport and experience a short field takeoff...the runway is 4,800 feet (CAE's two runways are 8,600 and 8,000 feet long) meaning the captain has to use different settings to get the aircraft airborne in short order. It's a takeoff I hope to experience one day...
Also you can find the southern end of US Highway 1...

Homer- you mentioned Jimmy Buffett, and that reminded me that his current wife is from Columbia originally. Her maiden name is Slagsvol. Jimmy's brother-in-law moved into the house next door to me (on Foxhall Road) in Forest Acres back around 1993. The brother-in-law was getting married, invited me to the wedding, and told me Jimmy Buffett was going to be there (this was August 1994). It thought he was kidding. I went to the wedding at the Lace House on the Governor's Mansion grounds, and noticed one particular fellow was getting more attention than even the bride and groom. Sure enough, it was Jimmy Buffett, dressed in a suit. He was cordial guy, but what struck me the most was how short he is. I'm 6 feet tall, and I towered over him.

@Andrew - I've seen pictures of the US-1 termination in Key West. I'd love to see it in person one day. A friend of mine went to Key West on vacation several years ago and he told me that he was petrified driving on all of the bridges that link the keys.

@Cam - I noticed the post to Ted about his use of military dates. Working with mainframe computers I can attest that everything is based off of a 24 hour clock cycle (no AM/PM). We don't use the military date format unless dealing with the DOD. We do, however, use the whole (A)pha - (Z)ulu phonetic alphabet in one way, shape or form. Plus, the computer industry LOVES acronyms just as much as the military......

Homer, after investigating my move to Hawaii, it appears to be out of the question. The cost of the plan ticket alone makes me want to barf.
Here's another idea. You, me, Key West, bar, women, sun, fun, tequila, palm trees, hammocks, flip flops, Sammie Hager, Jimmy Buffet, no worries, ocean breeze, mopeds, Hawaiian shirts, cookouts, lobster, sand and a lost shaker of salt. Could be a woman to blame. Nah, it would be our own damn fault.

Oh wow, I went to this place right before I joined the Navy and visited off and on over the years. This was the prequel to Starbucks, but with better ambiance and they even had board games there. I hate this.

That really is the "end of an era". I used to visit Goats quite frequently while in college in the early 2000s. A lot of memories there...
