Rita Smith Gallery, Richland Mall: 31 May 2014 5 comments
Here's a bit more bad news from Richland Mall, and this in one of the most high visibility areas, just across the corridor from Barnes & Noble.
UPDATE 18 September 2014 -- Added the first shot above, taken on 13 July 2008, showing the gallery in operation.

I think there are a few other stores remaining besides Belk and Barnes & Noble. Be that as it may, the number remaining is continuing to dwindle. Century Capitol Group has managed to land several stores since they bought the Forest Acres mall but for some reason they haven't had much staying power.
I'm beginning to believe that the only success they've had with long term staying power was to drop the Midtown at Forest Acres name in favor of a revival of the Richland Mall name...

Sad to see. I worked for Rita's husband, Fred, years ago at the Picture Place in the "old" Forrest Lake Shopping Center. I framed many Rita Smith prints.

I realize this isn't an anchor tenant but to me this is another big blow to Richland Mall.
In 2010 WIS did a feature on the future of what is "now known as Richland Mall." It was right after S&S closed and they interviewed Rita Smith (the namesake for this gallery) and she said that she planned to stick it out. Several other stores have come and gone in that time (most of which have featured here).
I remember someone from mall management telling the WIS people for their story that they felt S&S would likely regret their decision to leave. Bear in mind this was not long after Century Captiol Group acquired the property and renamed it Richalnd Mall.
