According to Chipco's home page as archived on the Internet Archive Wayback Machine

Chipco specializes in building a wide variety of desktop computers for just about any application.

Columbia has had more tech companies than you might expect, back at least to the days when NCR was building innovative systems in West Columbia. Still, I was unaware of this distributor, nestled with a cheerleading academy in a business park off of Farrow Road. I'm not sure exactly when they closed, but given that it was just in Have Your Say and that we recently turned a month over, I suspect it was the end of March.

  1. Wow! I wonder what happened to ChipCo. I suspect they didn't adjust with the times. I can recall in the late 90's and early 00's, I used to make 3-4 trips there per week picking up system builds that I would install in homes, offices, restaurants, etc. I wonder if they didn't see the downfall of the formal desktop PC coming? They were never the world's best company, somewhat slow and all, but it's still a blast from the past and a little bit sad to see they've closed.

  2. I switched my last company from them to Dell as soon as I started. I needed computers faster than I could get them from Chipco, not to mention how unprofessional it looks to have an office full of whiteboxes. Unless they were going to specialize in gaming systems or something similar, I don't see where they had a market.

  3. According to the State from 2009, they were trying to crack the medical, rollable, market.

  4. When I was working on my own in 2008-9, Chipco was useful when you needed a part immediately and couldn't wait for a delivery from a normal distributor.

More recently, they had tried to move from a distributor to an MSP.

  5. I dealt with these guys for years and like, Matt, I would go there typically when I couldn't wait for shipping from Amazon or NewEgg. I often told them that I was there for that very reason and their prices were so much higher than other distributors but it fell on deaf ears.

Obviously, it's not a great business model to be everyone's backup source.
