Well, that didn't last too long, I'm afraid. Sammiches was the follow-on operation to The Diner in the old Jesudi's building across from the Kmart. They opened in January 2014 and closed after about a month.

I only stopped by once, and I'm afraid I wasn't too impressed. First, I was expecting.. sammiches, and there were actually very few on the menu (and not ones I would normally go for) and second, the place was freezing. I had my sweater and my windbreaker the one buttoned and the other fully zipped up and I was still cold. The menu was some stapled laser-printed sheets, and I was the only one in the building. I had the feeling at the time (early Feb) that the place was not long for the world.

After commenter CayceKid mentioned that the place seemed closed, I rode by this afternoon (27 Feb) and there was a U-Haul van in front and the place was obviously being stripped -- something a look inside later in the evening confirmed.

  1. @ted - I wish you would have taken a close up of the mural on the side of the building. It looks interesting to say the least. What with the sports car that is obviously not of the time period depicted in the rest of the mural, the family standing in the middle of Main St. (that's not good) and what's up with the rooster???

  3. The revitalization that has happened in recent years within a quarter mile radius of this spot (between Cross Hill Market and the forthcoming Rosewood Crossing as well as the PDQ that will open as spring progresses) has me thinking this place would actually catch on if something with name recognition* moved in...

    * I feel that 806 St. Andrews Road needs something with name recognition to have a shot at success as well

  4. Me and my roommate both think the main problem with this place when it was Sammiches and The Diner, is and was there was never enough advertising about where and what it was. When I took advertising classes at USC back in the early 80's, the first thing one wants to do is ADVERTISE. Radio and TV spots and word of mouth. Second, is for ANY place to be successful is all about DECOR. The color of the paint, lighting "Ambiance" music (easy listening or classic 60's music), how everyone is dressed, customer service, a BIG parking lot and more room for more people to sit. This old building has been there since the old Carolina Skating Rink was torn down by the early 70's. I say tear it down or expand on the existing building to make it bigger to hold more people, have a bigger parking lot and advertise where you are and what you are, have bright colors or some inviting color or lights..not too bright or too dark where you have to use a flashlight to see what your doing...and NO CANDLES. It's a good location, but nothing so far has lasted a long time other than what it was originally. Maybe something will come along and stay around a while.

  5. Is 806 St. Andrews the location of the restaurant that has had more names than I can count on one hand or more? If so, I don't hold much hope.

The old Kroger is still across the street, vacant. A relatively modern building that can't seem to find a tenant.

Then you have the questionable Motel 6 two doors down. The reason I say questionable is that about 5 years ago a friend of mine came to town and stayed there. I went to visit and the stairwells reeked of urine. I can only imagine what it's like now.

The whole area, as I have said before, is falling into the Broad River Road syndrome. The area around and down Kay St. is full of low income and Section 8 housing. It's going to take a lot more than name recognition bring this area back.

  6. Homer that 806 St. Andrews Restaurant building has had the following come and go just in the last 10 years:

    - D's Wings (this one actually lasted a while but I think D's got spread too thin and wound up closing this location as well as ones in Columbiana Crossing (Casa Linda is there now) and Blythewood (Lizard's Thicket opened up in their former location there) and the Sparkelberry Crossing location that had 7 Grill and I think the 2005 Beltline Blvd. location moved back out after 7 left)
    - Fast Tracks BBQ (this one really tried to establish itself but got bought out of the lease)
    - El Torro Mexican Grill (not sure what happened here)
    - Baja Southwestern Grill (comments on that page seemed turned off by a weird setup it had)
    - Delmonico Diner (apparently the owner ran into health issues)

The building is for sale and the signage specifically says no lease on it. While I think something with name recognition is the spot's best chance at success, I've come to realize (stemming from what I've gathered about the Kroger that closed across the street nearly 2 years ago now) that it being Section 8 (especially if that perception is out amongst the community) is going to give something a tougher time catching on in that building. I've even had visions of it being overhauled into a doctor's office.

  7. Well the next contestant for this site is going to be Chocolate Nirvana Bakery and Cafe. I don't know if they're going to move here from their Richland St. location or this is a 2nd location.
