Apparently this was not the last Krystal in South Carolina, but it's pretty close. It looks like the other few that are left are clustered along the Georgia and North Carolina border areas with none in the Midlands, Pee Dee or Low Country.

This store, on US-17 Business near to Inlet Square Mall is not in an obviously bad location (though a Five Guys did open nearby a couple of years ago) but is in a little strip that doesn't seem to prosper. In particular, a Moe's failed a few storefronts down, something that seemed unlikely to me at the time, and one end unit has cycled through quite a few entertainment concepts (comedy club, karakoe..) in the last few years.

  2. Yuck.

Worst case of the green apple two step I ever had was from this chain.

  3. They're not White Castle, but they'll do in a pinch. I know there's still one on Woodruff Rd. in Greenville because I ate there Saturday.

  4. There is also one on Whiskey River Road in Aiken.

  5. I do miss Krystal. Sure, I paid dearly for it later that day, but there's something gratifying about ordering - and then eating - an entire sack full of cheeseburgers.

Weird the chains that seem to deliberately avoid operating in South Carolina. Krystal is one, Checkers/Rally's is another, and 7-11 was the strangest one of all, to me. At least that last wrong is being righted.

  6. Joey Chestnut, who ate 69 Nathan's Hot dogs in 10 minutes this July 4th for a new record, also holds the record for the Lrystal Square off where he ate 103 Krystal burgers in 8 minutes in 2007...Takeru Kobayashi devoured 97 the year prior to that...

As of 2010, the Krystal Square off is no longer as it's been cancelled so they could focus on new products and company owned locations...

  7. There were a few Krystals in Columbia back when , I can't remember when. One was in the K-Mart parking lot on Two Notch Road near Columbia Mall , back when I can't remember.
I also read somewhere, that I can't remember where, Krystal Gail or Gayle came up with her first name from the burger joint. I suppose her real first name ain't Krystal. Well, for that matter, my first real name ain't Studley.

  8. There were three in Columbia at one point in the 1980s-1990s, the K-mart/Two Notch rd. is the only one I rember though I want to say one was in West Columbia.

From what I hear, the chain is very big in Georgia.

  9. There was one in Cayce at (I think) the current Zaxby's location on Knox Abbot Drive (or perhaps next door at the Wendy's location).

  10. I've got a copy-cat recipe for White Castle burgers. Right down to how to make the little square patties with the holes punched in them to the sauteed onions in butter. They look and sound good but a little bit too much of a pain in the butt for me to try!!

  11. I think the third might have been on Elmwood near where the Bojangles is now.

  12. It seems like a lot of national fast food chains stop in Greenville. Checkers, Krystal, Jack in the Box... others. They're in Greenville, but not in Columbia or Charleston. I know I-26 traffic can be a pain sometimes, but still, I kind of wish they'd expand a bit.

  13. I think there was on one the 1000 block of Elmwood, near where that relatively new convenience store is.

  14. It was definitely on Elmwood. There was also a 3 (Three) Sisters Chicken. Not sure if it was a number or it was spelled out. That Bojangles has been there since the 80's. Had a buddy and his parents would always stop by there on the way back from church and bring back chicken and biscuits.

  15. Yes I remember the Krystal's when it was in Cayce South Carolina, here in Columbia SC. I was sad when they closed down. I wish someone, could open another one back up here in West Columbia or Cayce or Columbia SC. Does anybody know why they don't have one open in Columbia SC anymore?

  16. I think Krystal Burgers was either next to, or about the same spot as Lizards Thicket on Elmwood, or close to it.

  17. Apparently there are only 3 Krystal locations in SC now: Aiken, North Augusta & Gaffney..
