Quincy's Family Steakhouse, 2515 Sunset Boulevard 21 comments
This Quincy's, which now houses a Maurice's Barbeque, was I think the first in town to close. The way I recall it, and I'm very often wrong about anything involving dates or time, this one went first, the one on Forest Drive went second, and the one on Two Notch went last.
This Quincy's was on the far side of town from us, and I think I only ate here once, when we were coming back from the airport -- it was fine. I had the opportunity a few weeks ago to check out a surviving Quincy's in Florence at US-52 & I-95. It was not as nice as I recall the Two Notch store being in the beginning, but it was perfectly acceptable.

I think the first Quincy's in town to close was probably the Forest Drive location around '98. The others lasted until 2000, and pretty much either closed, or became Western Sizzlin's for a short while, before the Sizzlin's eventually closed. I also think that in 2000 the remaining stores closed or were converted in pretty short order.

I think the whole Quincy's franchise shut down. I know the Quincy's in Sanford FL, (a suburb of Orlando) became a Winghouse. Which is a small chain in Orlando.

That I-95 and US 52 intersection seems to have a knack for holding on to things the longest. Isn't that the location of a Thunderbird Motor Inn that is still kicking? And something else along tose lines, too.

Although time and preferences change a lot, does anyone know of a strong reason why the Quincy´s chain has closed?

Well, I don't think the "Big Fat Yeast Rolls" commercials helped. Just aside from being lame, never pitch your restaurant using the word "fat".

There appears to be one still in operation in Florence; http://www.florencequincys.com/
Quincy's was OK and a room-mate of mine use to drag me out to these steak-houses from time to time. Quincys was OK. All the other ones tasted like they fried their steaks in the same place they fried their liver.

I worked at the one on Rosewood in my Junior and Senior year of high school in 88-89. I also worked for the same manager on Piney Grove in 91. It was the most fun job I ever had in my 25 years of working. Just couldn't stand smelling like the place when I left.

Hi Sidney,
What were the names of your managers at the stores in Rosewood and Piney Grove? I am trying to find a friend of mine that also managed the Quincy's in orangeburg prior to 1990.jeff

Mr Sanders, Mr Wall (passed away in 1990 in the store during dinner rush), Mr Irby. Mr Sanders was the manager at the Rosewood store for a few years and then transferred over to Piney Grove. He asked me to be the head cook over there and to train his new cooks for a few months. He also had a friend who managed the Orangeburg store. His name was Jerry, he was a short black guy with glasses.

Hi I worked at the Rosewood Location in 98. Does anyone know where all the managers are now. This was the best restaurant job I'd ever had. I wonder how Mrs. Virginia is doing now.

The Quincy's in Orangeburg was manager by a redheaded lady named Betty Crapse. I worked there in the early 90s. She managed it for many, many years.

My name is Kelly and I worked the salad bar and hot bar and desert bar @ Quincy's on sunset Blvd. West Columbia sc. for about 7 years in the 1990's and I loved working there we were like family and the food was delicious. I worked for Mr. J Sampson and Altonette Dawson and Rick Howell. My bosses used to get phones from customers that threatened to call the labor board because I looked like I was 12 yes. Old I was the fastest salad bar girl they ever had. I wish I could remember the people I used to work with last name because I miss them.

I used to drive spring break bus trips to Florida coming out of Canada or the northern US in the early 90s. We often stopped at Quincy's coming or going since it was about 6 hours out. I forget which one, there was a highway detour that took us right by anyway. Fantastic food and loved the fresh rolls. I quit driving bus in 97. Was sad to hear that so many locations were closing, but the restaurant business is tough and many changes take place. Miss a lot of others also like Morrison's, Shoney's, Howard Johnson's, Feel sorry for young people who will never experience the great restaurants of the 20th century.

There was a Quincy's on Piney Grove Road, but it was closed a bit before, wait for it, San Jose moved in, adding strength to Alex's claim.
