Don Pedro Mexican Restaurant, 2200-A Airport Boulevard: 2006 15 comments
As is the case with most non-national Mexican restaurants, Don Pedro was not the first restaurant operation in this building. To me it has sort of a Howard Johnson look to it, but I could be wrong. At any rate, the building is sited at, though not affiliated with, the Travellers Inn motel at the intersection of Airport Boulevard and I-26. I never made it to Don Pedro since I figured it would be about the same as a number of closer Mexican establishments. (Though the Free Times link below associates it with the Don Pedro on Two Notch which was supposed to be quite good).
I give 2006 as the closing date since it showed up in the Free Times Bites & Sights guide for 2006, but apparently no other year, and was not in the Feb 2007 phonebook.

I think I recall this as having been an IHOP at some point in its life.

I just remember it being the office/main building of Days Inn when it was new. I lived right up the road going towards the airport in the Church Hill Heights subdivision back in the early to late 60's, and this building wasnt there as far back as 1968, so it must have been built after 1970.

Oh, and Burger King used to be across the street from it also.

What happened to the BK Del mentions is that Bob Brandi bought a tract of land across the interstate and built a Pitt Stop Burger King and moved the BK that used to be across the street into this one...
There also used to be another restaurant (if anyone remembers, pls. enlighten me) next to that that has been razed as well. I'd love to see something new open up on those former spots but no such luck as of yet. With its close proximity to CAE, it could very easily attract people going to/from the airport. Also, while I'm mentioning CAE, let me just say that Vision Airlines will be flying from CAE to Ft. Walton Beach on Monday afternoons and Friday evenings if you are in the mood to go down to Florida's gulf coast

I can remember when there was nothing on that road at all other than at Beacon Hill with it's little "grocery" type store and maybe a couple of other stores, but from there on up towards the underpass, there was nothing there til you got to the American Gas Station which is still there building wise but I think it's Exxon now..and that particular gas station has been there at leaste since the very early 60's.

Andrew, I could have sworn that there was a lizard's thicket down there... is that what you referring to? Speaking of Don Pedro's I still remember two guys on a flight into CAE asking where to eat and another guy swearing by the place... this must have been late '05 early '06. Cant vouch for it personally.

There was a "Denny's" more or less across the street from this that was razed.

The restaurant across the street was called Kettle. I don't remember much about it but I recall my parents taking me there to eat occasionally when I was very young. If I remember correctly they had a second location on Broad River Rd. that then became Hooters. That building was bulldozed for the new Taco Bell.

I'm 99% sure it was the Days Inn Restaurant. I remember seeing Days Inn restaurants in buildings like that.

The Lizard's is closer to the Airport..
I'm pretty sure I would remember an IHOP.

This would have began its life as a dual-purpose building - part of it would have been the lobby/registration area for the Days Inn, most of it would have been a "Tasty World" restaurant.

The BK, Denny's, and Waffle House further up the entrance ramp were all purchased by the SCDOT and razed in anticipation of a rework of that intersection, so I was told a few years back when the Denny's closed.
