Yesterday's, 2030 Devine Street: 4 April 2020 (Final) 20 comments
And so it begins..
Yesterdays, the iconic Five Points restaurant and tavern, is closing and its future is uncertain as the coronavirus slows businesses across Columbia.
...
“We’re basically letting the virus dictate what’s going on with us,” MacRae said. “If it doesn’t last too long, we’ll be back. If it does, we might not be.”
When my parents were still living, we ate at Yesterday's fairly often. In recent years, I have only gone a few times, but never worried about it, as I figured it would always be there. Hopefully they will come back.
UPDATE 21 April 2020 -- As reported by commenter Ed in the comments, and confirmed by WIS, Yesterday's is no more. A real shame.
UPDATE 29 April 2020: Add a COVID-19 tag.
UPDATE 12 May 2020 -- Well, they haven't lost any time gutting the interior!
UPDATE 30 October 2023 -- Setting up to open as Ruby:

I have been eating and drinking in there since college. It became my go to place to take guests from out of town and everyone has loved it.

Say it isn't so...
As already noted, like so many other things, I assumed this would always be here...or at least wouldn't bother to take time to consider the possibility of Yesterday's going out of business.
When I was a student at USC, my uncle would take me out to lunch here occasionally. A few months ago, before we went to a USC lady Gamecocks basketball game, my wife, my daughter, and I met my brother and niece here for a meal. The food was still great and has never, ever disappointed.
My favorite has always been the country (formerly known as "Confederate") fried steak with the Arkansas Traveler being a close second. I remember having fish and grits here years ago, too, and it was also really good.

My go-to meal was also the Confederate Fried Steak w/ collard greens, black eyed peas and cornbread....Good eatin'!!

Yesterday’s announced on their Facebook page that they won’t be reopening. This will be a big loss to the 5 Points area.

Oh, wow!
I'm not surprised, but that's still awful.

Dang...what a shame this is. Like other commenters, the Confederate Fried Steak and CF chicken with green beans and mashed potatoes covered in that delish gravy.
Stumbled in many times during St. Patty's Day festivities. Shandon was a great place to live.
I also saw Hootie & the Blowfish play here to a crowd of about 20-30 peeps on several occasions before they blew up. : )

I hadn't been to Columbia in 7 years. Move here and go to Yesterday's. Less than a month later it's closed. Damn you corona virus!

I have fond memories of eating at Yeserday's with several different groups of folks my life's path has crossed with along the way so I hated to see it go as well.
I feel Dave's last sentence as well as I believe that most of us have certain things they can say that about (be it restaurants that have closed, activities we miss, friends/relatives we've lost, trips that had to be shelved, friends/relatives we miss the company of, etc.) we all have something we've struggled with.

WLTX has a report speaking to preparations for a new tenant for this space...

Huh. That's an odd story. Basically it seems to boil down to the owners are doing work on the building and it sure would be nice if someone rented it.

Sounds like they are stripping everything out in hopes that it could attract a tenant. Last time I went in Yesterdays the floor felt like an obstacle course with all the humps in it.

Per ColaDaily.com, Ruby Slipper a New Orleans themed brunch restaurant will move into this location.
Yea for a New Orleans restaurant!
But why in the world do we need yet another brunch place.Just as there used to be a dozen frozen yogurt places, I don't see all of these staying in business. Maybe this place will be great, but how many breakfast places do we need?
5 Points now has how many places with a dedicated brunch menu? Not counting Waffle House & ChickFilA

Matt - Also, cake and cupcake businesses (I don't know if it's proper to call them "bakeries" because they seem to focus on cakes/cupcakes). A lot of them suddenly opened in 2019-22.

According to officials, the popular brunch spot will take over the location Yesterday's occupied for more than a decade.
I mean, that's a true & safe thing to say, but wow, *considerably* more than a decade!

^^ I checked a WIS article brian linked earlier on this page and they said that Yesterday's closure brought to an end a 33 year run...
