Well, it seems that whenever I have gotten by this Widewater Square Harveys lately, I have either been shooting against the sun, or it was dark. You can see some slightly better pictures of this store in the closing for the Bi-Lo it replaced. (In fact, I don't actually have any pictures of the Bi-Lo there at all).

I don't have anything special to say about this store, just that it is part of the general closing of Columbia's Harveys locations, and that I have heard no plans for the future of the building. Of course it is early yet for that.

UPDATE 17 April 2023 -- Commenter Homer sends this picture of the new storefront for the upcoming WorldFood Marketplace (as discussed in the comments):

  1. In that area I can’t see any grocer moving into that space.

  2. I think the newish Walmart Marketplace down the street didn't do this location any favors.

  3. My perception of this store went down based on the last two times I made it in before the Walmart Neighborhood Market Heath mentioned was built (opened about 2 years ago) but I can see where the presence of that Walmart didn't help...I had the chance to speak with someone who worked in management at the Save-a-Lot that was on 817 St. Andrews and he hinted that the Walmart Neighborhood market did a number on their business...that coupled with the issues Southeastern Grocers (parent company of Bi-Lo, Harveys, Winn Dixie & Fresco y Más) is having did a number on this location (let's not forget the fact that this closure stems from a bankruptcy Southeastern Grocers is facing)...

Futhermore I can understand Robert's assessment that a grocer isn't likely to move into that space...recently after a Piggly Wiggly closed on West Beltline Blvd. it wound up becoming Roses...while I don't see it becoming Roses considering there is an established one down the street but I think a store like that is more likely than a grocer...

  4. Something called World Market Grocer is planning to move into this space...the way the signage is worded leads me to believe that they'll have sections specializing in different things from different parts of the world...

  5. Andrew, does it appear to be the same as the other World Market stores? Home decor, gifts, furniture, and snacks, with an "around the world" theme. There is one on Garner's Ferry Road, in the plaza with Target, and there used to be one in Sandhills. They were owned by the same company as Bed, Bath, & Beyond. Another company bought the brand in 2021.

  6. It looks to be a different World Market than the ones that Robin is referencing that has had locations at both the Shoppes at Woodhill as well as the Lexington Pavilion (and of course the former Village at Sandhill location)...I had thought that they'd have a Harbison/Bower Parkway area location but such never came to fruition.

Be that as it may, I have been unable to figure anything much about this World Market Grocer moving in but I know it is a different thing than the World Market that has the other 2 locations I mentioned earlier...

  7. My understanding is that it's literally a world market grocery store. Instead of just going to an Indian grocery or a Hispanic grocery, etc... you've got multiple countries represented in this one store. I think if it's that then it has the potential to do well in this location, but if it's more of a "high end/high price" type of place it isn't going to last long.

  8. I went in yesterday and spoke with the owner. He said they should be open in a month. It is exactly what it sounds like, a one stop shop for multi-national groceries. I’m so excited!

  9. @Ted,

I sent you a picture of the storefront with the new signage. Let me know if you got it or not.

  10. @Homer,

Yes sorry I meant to reply, but got it and will hopefully have it up today.

  11. Andrew and Gypsie, thanks for the clarification. I would have been surprised if the World Market chain (with home decor, gifts, etc.) was actually opening a new location in Columbia, after closing in Sandhills!

  12. A new World Market locaion like the one Robin wondered about wouldn't have surprised me for the Harbison/Bower Parkway area* but I don't see this being the type of space they'd move into.

    * Frankly I thoguht that one day they'd get a location in that area but such never came to fruition...

  13. Folks WIS has a story discussing the new World Food store that is moving into this spot...another thing is that it removes the 'food desert' from this part of town...

  14. @Andrew - I think the store sounds interested, and I admire what the owner is trying to do. I hope he can make a positive impact on the area. Many of us know why the Walmart Market on that road closed.

  16. It's all going to come down to price. This store is considered a specialty store - if it has the prices that typically go along with that kind of store, the people who live in that area aren't going to be able to shop there on the regular.

It will also have to have excellent security or half their inventory is going to walk out the front door just like it did with the Walmart Market.

I hope it does well, but I won't be at all shocked if it's gone within two years.
