I was wondering what business this nice little old house next Triangle Lock & Safe on Sunset was. Looking at the pictures I took, I couldn't even get a street number (for some reason I didn't get out for a closer look at the time), but google maps came through and identified it as 1410 Sunset and the former site of yet another of the Midlands title loans operations. They listed in the Feb 2012 phonebook, but not the Feb 2013 one, so I am tagging the closing date as 2012.

  1. Before this location was a title loan it was a store called “The Gunsmith” that sold firearms, accessories and did gun repair. I know they were open in the late 90s and I believe into the early 2000s.

If you google “The Gunsmith” on Sunset Blvd, you get the address 1410 “B” Sunset Blvd. The results include a Facebook page with a review from 2014 but I think the store was closed then. I wonder if the “B” location on the address is the building in the back and the gentleman closed his store but continue to repair guns.

  2. Too bad this is commercial property. I wouldn't mind living in that house. Looks like it should be in Shandon. I never understood why people would build a brick house just to turn around and paint it. That's defeating the purpose as far as I'm concerned!

  3. The Gunsmith was in the small house between this house and Triangle lock. Had many guns repaired there.. He was a great guy. Knew his shit. Last time I took My Ruger there He said He was getting ready to retire and move back up North

  4. @Homer -- yep, it's like the aunt who insists on washing the Solo cups after a family potluck..

  6. @Hey - I wash the Solo cups and save them for the bum's that come over and don't bring anything.
I also save the outdated beer for them.

Back in the 90's I was looking for a shotgun scope. Not for my shotgun but for an AR-15 I had just purchased. I stopped by this place and remember it as a ok gun shop.
I Drove all over Columbia and finally found one at the store that was just off Broad River Road behind the Burger King across from Dutch Square Mall. Can't remember the name of it to save my life. It was something like Bada Bada Wholesale or something. As soon as one walked in the door there was the jewelry department. I believe Ted did a post on them this site. But can't remember the name, someone help me out here.

  7. I have a friend of a friend of a friend that has a friend that works for a beer distributor that has a friend that his friend gives me cases of out of date beer. I hate to throw it away when I have friends that do not contribute when we party. I let them drink all they want.

It is hilarious to watch the expression on their face when they take the first sip, they look at the beer, pause for a moment, and go on drinking as if nothing is wrong. HA ha, I guess the saying " Beggars can't be choosey" holds true. Gives me a good chuckle.

  9. @Homer - Thank you. That was one of those things, like trying to remember someones name and can't, that bugs the poo poo out of us until we remember.

Sam Salmon, I mean Sam Soloman, I would have NEVER remembered that unless someone told me. After you mention it I do remember Sam Soloman, only a true Imronese could remember that far back. When I bought my scope it was Service Merchandise. I Believe it was Service Merchandise as early as the 1980's. Correct me if I'm wrong.

  10. I just Googled Service Merchandise and interestingly enough, they are still in business as a web only store. LOOK OUT Amazon, you have competition.

  11. @Rick,

Service Merchandise may still be in business on the web, but they are a far cry from what they were in the 1980s. It appears they only sell jewelry now online. In the 80s when they had retail stores they sold all kinds of stuff. If I remember correctly, my dad bought his White's metal detector at Service Merchandise and possibly his telescope. As kids, we preferred the Service Merchandise Christmas toy catalog more than any other. I remember spending many hours going through that catalog and writing down my Christmas list.

  12. @James R - It was the Sears catalog for me. Back in the day the only department stores I can remember my family shopping at was, in order of frequency, Sears, K-Mart, Whites, Tapp's and maybe Belk or JC Penny.
I don't remember many other places to shop back in the 60's besides smaller, privately owned business.

  13. I have a friend who has a band that played there about 3 years ago. Probably some point between the gun place and title loans.

  14. back in the 70's (would be around 76?) this was a day care center and me and my brother went there a few times before our parents settled on another place.
