I believe the first operation I can recall in this space moved here from the old Woodhill Mall, and may have been called Jonathan's. The reason I recall that specifically is that it featured in a story The State did on the best hamburgers in Columbia. For several years I had that story clipped and in my glove box as I tried out various of the places mentioned. Jonathan's (if that was the name) was one that somehow I never connected with at either location.

Stopping by on a fairly crisp fall day, the terrace space seemed as though it would be a nice spot to eat lunch al fresco.

UPDATE 6 October 2016 -- Well, I noticed in the closing for Jefferson Square Theater, you can see that the restaurant spot was then Cavanaugh's Deli, "The Deli For Your Belly", so I have added that to the post title and a picture here:

I have also added The Lunch Box to the post title based on the comments.

  1. Back in the late 70s-early 80s the sandwich shop that was located in this spot was called Gatsby's.

  2. Wasn't this the second location of The Lunch Box and was rebranded as the Palmetto Grille a few years back?

  3. @ Justin,

Not sure if it was the second location of the Lunch Box or not, but it did go by that name previously. It has been about 2 years I think since the name was changed to Palmetto Grille. I only know because my wife works for the state government in the building right next to this restaurant. We ate here often when I would meet up with her for lunch.

  4. I have an aunt that knows the family that owns this (She and I ate here several times and enjoyed it) and she told me that this was originally The Lunch Box* as Justin stated but then someone else in the family took it over and decided to rebrand it as Palmetto Grille. Apparently many the staff all abruptly left and also the rent increased significantly and those two factors did them in.

    * A simple search reveals that they have a location at 1305 Lady Street as well (but have yet to go to that one)

  5. My wife indicated a new business is scheduled to open here soon. She believe's the name is going to be "God's Blessing." A quick Google search indicates there is a God's Blessing Catering Service in Columbia. I have found two different addresses for them. The first is 526 1st Street South and the other is 510 Fountain Lake Road. Perhaps this restaurant is somehow related to the catering business or it is the catering business that is moving to this location.
