Skip's One Hour Cleaners, 1312 Sunset Boulevard: 2011 3 comments
I remember driving past this building some years ago and being pleased that such a classic design was still in service. I'm a sucker for anything with gull wings, and whatever this related type of design is called. The aerodynamics make it look like with a good headwind, it would hover like Sally Field.

The concept of One Hour Martinizing was pioneered by a New York chemist named Henry Martin in 1949. At the time, dry cleaning was done with flammable solvents, so the plants were located remotely from the storefronts. A customer would drop off their cleaning "in town", the garments would travel to the production facility to be cleaned and pressed, then they would return to the store several days later for pickup. By using a non-flammable solvent, the use of which was discovered by Martin, dry cleaning plants could now be located much more conveniently, and the process could be carried out in a much more timely manner.

This was originally a One Hour Martinizing (whatever that means) Cleaners. There were several around Columbia and all the buildings at this futuristic looking design inspired in part by the 1962 and 1964 World's Fairs.
