Pizza Pizza! -- Little Caesar in Irmo has moved slightly down Saint Andrews Road from this spot at 6903 to the old Blockbuster at 7249:

Interestingly, when I was googling the address, I turned up a LoopNet listing with a much better picture than I was able to take against the sun -- but with the building clearly marqueed as Custom Pizza Co.

  1. Custom Pizza Company was originally in Quail Valley (within walking distance of this). I remember a Popeye's being in the site Crossroads Center (next door to CrossRoads Middle (which is now CrossRoads Intermediate School)) now occupies in the late 90s. I remember when I was going to CrossRoads after Popeye's closed (1999/2000 timeframe) people were using it as a dropoff/pickup spot for students and the principal at the time questioned the safety of doing such. That Popeye's was finally torn down somewhere in the 2002-05 timeframe and Custom Pizza built their own store there and then the shops behind it were constructed somewhere in the 2005-08 timeframe...the Crossroads Center CPU back there opened up in the summer of 2008 according to a newspaper article scan I have).

Custom Pizza strikes me as a case of an owner ready to make a lifestyle change and no one being available to pass the torch on down to (which is oftentimes a reason why family businesses wind up closing up shop). I remember when the changeover was about to happen there was an article in The State indicating that the owner was (among other things) looking forward to spending his first Christmas Eve at home since the Reagan administration. Shortly before Christmas in the 2006/07 timeframe they closed down and after the new year Little Caesars set up shop there and they were there until last November when they moved into their present location in the former Blockbuster. I think the main advantage it offers them is a pickup window which several of the other Little Caesars around have...

  2. Now a Popeye's is a restaurant that I would like to see open in Irmo along with my often mentioned Captain D's.

  3. Popeyes....I seem to recall that this building on Decker was originally a Popeye's Chicken restaurant, or it was early on in this building's history. http://columbiaclosings.com/wordpress/?p=10896
Ted, do you have any old phone books from the '70s, or '80s that can verify if this is correct?

  7. Like Cedric I have memories of Custom Pizza providing pizza for the Irmo campuses (though Campus I had become CrossRoads and R became Irmo Middle by the time I went through)...
