My dad tells a story from his truck-driving days of a certain Shell station along I-26 that up until about 20 years ago had this huge sign along the Interstate. All five letters were individual lighted units. One night the "S" was burned out, and...well, comedy ensued.
Near my hometown there was a Sears catalog store whose letters would often not be completely functional. Riding by at night and seeing the word "EARS" on the front of a store is hilarious when you're seven years old.

The Shell Station was on I-26 through I think the late 70's. It was next to the Howard Johnson's Motel. I rememer the "S" being burned out quite a bit.. I dont think I would wanna buy gas from there..
