San Jose Express, 1720 Sunset Boulevard: Early July 2011   6 comments

San Jose is probably the biggest local Mexican chain (though they don't all have the same ownership), and one I like pretty well. I never made it to this smaller location on Sunset not far from the zoo, and in fact am pretty sure I did not know that it was there. Commenter MB notes that it wasn't there too long. I have to say Sunset Center has a good-looking ice cream cone on their sign!

  1. Ted, there were also a few other restaurants at this location. Famous Ray's Girl, Hailey's Hand dipped ice cream, and some Japanese Hibachi restaurant.

  2. At one time, this location housed "Zia's Pizza" which was quite good the 3-4 times I visited. It has since changed to "Tony's" which frankly is so bad in comparison (in both food quality and service) that I have since stopped visiting.

Anyway, Zia's (and I believe Tony's too) shared space with the "hibachi grill" AND the hot-dog-diner locations. Talk about one-stop shopping. By the pics, it appears that San Jose took over the "hibachi grill" side, but I honestly don't ever remember it even opening.

  3. There was a Sprint store in there at one point that seemed to help this center out tremendously. Too many restaurants.

  4. They actual opened up a sit down one behind the new chick-fila on augusta highway. I think that is why they closed this one as quick as they did.

  5. Now it looks like the Tonys is closed too. It looks empty when I pass by and they are advertising a hibachi grill coming soon, I wonder if it is going in the old Tonys and San Jose part. The only restaurant left there now is Jersey Mikes.

  6. The Tony's here was run by the son of the folks who ran the original one over at the corner of Knox Abbott Drive and 9th Street. They apparently retired and sold that location and he started up a place on his own. The food always sucked there, and I'm sure his was just as bad.
