Longtime Leesville barbecue landmark, Jackie Hite's will be closing down on 23 September 2018.

According to The State's encomium for Jackie Hite on his passing in 2016, the roots of the restaurant go back to the 1950s, and

On Hite’s passing, High said it is not necessarily the end, but “it’s sad to lose the old hands that did it right, the old fashioned way ... whole hog over coals. There’s a big difference between whole hog and butts only.

“Jackie Hite was (one of) the last in all of South Carolina to barbecue a whole hog over wood. He would start the pig on Thursday and lay it out on Friday for a pig picking at the restaurant,” says High. “And when I would go out for barbecue on my own, I would always choose Friday night for Jackie Hite’s pig picking.”

Now, according to WLTX the family has elected to wind the buisness down on the anniversary of Mr. Hite's passing, but there's still time to get out there once more.

  1. This place had very good BBQ and sweet tea. They had the buffet style all you can eat lunch. I used to work in Lexington for a finance company and would stop in here to eat at the end of every month when my boss sent me out to B/L skip tracing customers who kept forgetting they had a loan through the company. Hite's was the only thing I looked forward to during that job. Sad to see an original like Jackie Hite's close.

  2. It's a shame that these old family BBQ joints are going by the wayside. The only one's left now are the other Hite's, Shealy's and Little Pigs. I don't really count Piggy Park since they have gone 'commercial'. I still miss Ray Lever's and Oak Grove.

  4. I used to go here on occasion if I was near B/L. Jackie had the best BBQ right off the pit. The buffet wasnt big but had all the importatnt sides (M&C, collard, rice, etc.) to go with BBQ. The meat was in huge chunks set on the buffett and you used a fork or tongs to grab what you wanted. BBQ would fall off the bone. One of the best was the pork skins. They were crunchy but soft and just melted. Some would still have a little meat attached to them and those were the best. I've never been to another BBQ place like this it truely was authentic. RIP Jackie
