OfficeMax, 607 Bush River Road: 2006   12 comments

Posted at 6:52 pm in closing

OfficeMax was the odd man out in the Office Depot/Staples rivalry. It was a perfectly fine office supply store, but apparently, at least in the South Carolina market, there wasn't room for all three chains, and OfficeMax started shuttering its local stores. The chain does continue on in other markets.

Wikipedia says that at one time OfficeMax was owned by K-Mart, which perhaps explains the location of this store in the K-Mart parking lot at the intersection of Dutch Square Boulevard and Bush River Road. I shopped at this location a number of times for non-descript stuff. I do remember when they had their going-out-of-business sale, that I picked up a good deal on a paper shredder.

Given the current state of K-Mart, I suppose the drama of this location is not What will go into the OfficeMax location?, but Will this K-Mart survive?. Given the recent opening of a super Wal-Mart a few blocks down the street, I'd have to say that's questionable.

UPDATE 30 April 2009:

It's now the Columbia Campus for Remington College:

UPDATE 11 March 2011: Update the closing date based on comments here. Also added full street address.

UPDATE 26 January 2021: Adding map icon and updating tags.

  1. I rmeember this was a Big Star in the '70's. What store was this after that? I worked at that K-Mart in 1988, and can't remember what this was then. I had no idea the OfficeMax even closed!

  2. I don't recall the Big Star at all, though it makes sense as Big Star and K-Mart seemed to like co-locating (though it took Wal-Mart to make the connection: "Hey, instead of having a grocery store by our store, why don't we sell grocieries?"..)

If it was anything after Big Star and before OfficeMax, I don't recall that either...

  3. It was a K-mart food store during the 70's along with the store on Jackson Blvd (the food store was on the far left side of it) the Bush river rd store was a stand alone--but shared the same parking lot.

  4. My memory is that the Jackson Blvd K-Mart had a "Big Star" grocery attached to the left of it. (And that Big Star was related to "Colonial" somehow)

  5. For some reason, I had in my mind that it was a "Home Quarters" type store after Big Star, but they were on Broad River Road.

  6. The left side of the Jackson Blvd, K-Mart (that I have been shopping in for 46 years) has been a Big Star, a Ben Franklin Crafts store, a Three Guys Grocery, and a couple of other things I can't remember.

  8. The K-mart in Cayce had it's grocery store on the right side of it.. I guess it was the same store as what the car parts place was. I dont remember if it was a Big Star or something else, and I dont remember what year the grocery end closed. Anyone?

  9. Didnt K-Mart on Ft. Jackson Blvd open in 1963? and what year did the one in Cayce open? 1965 or 1966? I do remember that there was a lumber yard/business that sat where Kmart is now in Cayce, but dont know what was where the Ft. Jackson Kmart is..anyone?

  10. This was Moore's Home Improvement store after it was a grocery store. Their logo had a fox in it. My dad still has some stuff in the garage with their stickers on it.

  12. I use to work at that OfficeMax when I first moved to Columbia back in 96. It closed soon after I left. So that building was empty for years before Remington moved in. In fact, then I drove cab for awhile and that was one of the cab stands was in that parking lot.
