After after the huge Radio Shack die-off of a year or so ago, the only two Radio Shack locations I could think of that were still open, were this one by Kmart in Lexington, and one in Murrells Inlet. Now that this one is going, I will have to keep my eye on the Grand Strand location.

  1. I think there's still one open at Bush River and I26 in front of WalMart.

  2. There are 3 locations on the Grand Strand: Surfside Beach, Murrells Inlet and Conway.

  3. I thought the Walmart store on Bush River had become that fly-by-night Laptops 4 Less con job....

  4. Homer's right about the Bush River Village Radio Shack. After Christmas they had a radio commercial that started with someone hysterically crying in disappointment after not getting the laptop they were looking to have which turned me off. I've gotten the vibe lately that they haven't lasted long there the times I've been by...

I do believe there is a Radio Shack on US #1 in West Columbia in front of the recently remodeled Walmart there.

  5. Yes, there is one in front of the Wal-Mart on Augusta Highway. It is in the same center that used to have Hollywood Video, and Payless Shoe Source.

  6. There was a writeup in The State today indicating that this RadioShack will be closing during the month of September...it indicated that the West Columbia location mentioned earlier (2367 Augusta Road) will likely be closing before much longer but it indicated that the details have yet to be finalized...

  8. In the 70's and 80's Radio Shack had all the cool stuff electronic buffs and audiophiles could not get enough of.
They lost direction and that "Cool stuff" feel somewhere along the way after that.
I believe they could be relevant again if the right COO comes along. There is cool stuff out there that they should focus on.
Trying to revive the business banking on cell phones is not going to get people back in the store. There are all kinds of electronics that HH Gregg and Best Buy don't sell that Radio Shack should delve into and fill the void.

  9. The biggest thing I miss about Radio Shack are the electronic parts. If you were into electronics there was anything in the store that you could use to repair or practically build anything from scratch. Patch cords that would allow you to connect just about anything to anything else. You could also find any kind of odd battery you could think of from the day.

I seem to recall they had RC cars, car phones and such long before they were the craze they are today.

I still have a set of Mach II speakers that I have connected to my home stereo. Used to have a multi-band 'world' radio, an 8-track recorder, graphic equalizer and a 4-channel quadraphonic synthesizer.

  10. While you are browsing the catalogs don't forget to look at the prices on the computer equipment. Insane how expensive they used to be. Of course I spent over a grand for my first 486DX machine.

  11. Well folks the last one has bitten the dust...

This Radio Shack and an earlier one mentioned on Highway 1 held on while the others closed (and one by one featured here)...

Then this one bit the dust and here it is...

Today I noticed while riding by said Highway 1 RadioShack that it is closed up and apparently pieces of shelves are stacked so RadioShack is offically a thing of the past in the Columbia MSA...

  13. 3 C's Christian Bookstore has opened in this space. Not sure exactly when, but I noticed it for the first time about a week ago.
