My late grandmother felt Thansgiving was getting skipped over in favor of Christmas...
This week I saw the Lowe's on US Highway 1 in West Columbia with these decorations while having dinner at the Popeye's across the street.
Those of you that don't want to ffight the mall crowds here, I recommend you steer clear of the Filipino Capitol of Manilla as their mall crowds are bigger than ours and some go 24/7 and some are already in full swing...

I firmly believe it is wrong for big box retailers to start displaying Christmas items before Thanksgiving. The problem here is, that people will purchase items from the stores that have them available, so who is to blame, the stores for trying to make a profit, or the shoppers that are willing to buy this early?

@Andrew - LOL. I understand your predicament. I also am having to make concessions. When O'mamma took office, the buzz was, "Time for change" and "Things are going to be different now" and they certainly are. But seriously, if I could find a way to have half of the 300 million people in the US send me a dollar, Hmmm... And Andrew, It's only a dollar, come on... Also, the statement by Andy Rooney, I can relate to.

Didn't you know that King Odumbo is supposed to take care of everything for us. That's why it's called "SOCICALISM". Let the Government take care of things for us. So email President Obozo and ask him for money this year. And ask him also for a FREE "Odumbo" Phone. I'm sure he'll be more than glad to help. The way the Holidays are running together, may as well have Christmas, Valentines, Easter and everthing else 24/7 all year round.

Like I said in another post, last year Kohl's had their stores decorated by this time. I was in Michael's Arts & Crafts about a month ago and they had all of their Christmas craft stuff out already.
They was the holidays all run together I think we should celebrate Happy Everthing. Here is my mascot for this new celebration!!!!

Someone had a cartoon that someone wished a happy holiday in such a manner as to combine Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas into one word (taking syllables from each one to make it as such) and there is a response along the lines of, "I liked it better when we only had one holiday at a time" that I wish I could find...

@Jason - Very nice response. (Unhappy dealing w/it). I set myself up for you to really trash me, even changing my name to dick. You maintained your composure and did not retaliate in an aggressive manner, even in a situation where even I might have said something nasty. I respect you opinions and hope you will post again. Please, let's keep this forum a place to talk about relative topics, reminiscing, Cola town history and having fun. This was the last place I thought that I would see politics rearing its ugly head. There are scads of other forums where this back and forth bashing can be posted. Let's not turn this site into one!!!!!

I agree with Homer...there are plenty of places for political discussions without bringing it to this site...this site (for me) is about sharing knowledge of places gone by in Columbia (sometimes I am able to share my expertise about them, sometimes it opens my eyes to places that existed before I came along)...

@Homer & Andrew - I agree. I feel really bad that I may have been the one to start it all after Andrew said he was unable to contribute to my "Give Rick a dollar Day" fund, and his reply was funny, As I have said before, I tend to say things that I should not. I'm working on it, I ask you to work with me, as I have found a site that I enjoy and hope I don't screw up. All I can say right now is, "I'm sorry for what I said". Sorry again Jason.

I had a buddy who would stopped by my house after work for a few beers. Around Thanksgiving, he was lamenting about how his wife wanted him to decorate. Trim the house with lights for Christmas.
I simply jabbed my finger into the air saying; "OH THANKS! you reminded me!" went to my closet, pulled out a tiny cloth Santa doll, placed it on the mantle and announced; "I'M DONE!"
For the record though, a fresh tree is best.

Real or artificial? Hmm, let's see. I do love the smell of a fresh cut tree in the house. But you have to deal with needles and watering and all of that crap.
I always hated old fashioned artificial trees that you had to put together branch by branch. What a pain in the butt!!
What I have now is a one piece pre-lit artificial that folds out when you stand it upright. Throw some ornaments and tinsel on it, plug it in and light up a pig ole scotch pine candle for the aroma and it's all good...:^)

My wife and I enjoy the whole shopping for a tree thing every year. The aroma of a fresh cut tree in the house adds to the festive atmosphere of the season.
Rick, I just read in another post that you worked for Square D in '74 and'75. Do you recall what departments?

@Terry - I was a Material Handler while a Senior at Lower Richland High. I worked the 2nd Shift under a Supervisor named Andrew Jackson. My wife worked there from 1978 to 2011.

@Andrew - I agree 100%. I grew up with colored Christmas lights and can't really get into the whole clear bulb thing. I friend of mine got in hot water with his neighborhood nazi association for putting up colored lights which was against their policy. He's going to put them up again this year!!

I bought 3 LED colored light strings to try out: mini-lights (50), C7 (25) and C7 Ceramic (25). I think we're gonna go with the mini lights because they are cheaper and you get twice as many, but the C7 LED lights are stunningly close to the old bulbs of my childhood. So much so that my mind was telling me not to touch the ceramic ones because they were hot as the hinges.
We put white lights in the ard tree. have to get a set of those and see how they look.
What I am impressed with is how much less power they draw, which is great because we go bonkers with light strings.

I like LED lights in general...ever since I've noticed their use on traffic signals ca. 2003 and reading a blurb about how they use less energy and last longer than one bulb...one time my late grandmother called them a 'dot-matrix' bulb and immediately didn't understand where she came up with that. I've noticed also that they have better visibility from a greater distance than one-bulb (something my grandmother once pointed out to me).
My goal is to one day have a home of light bulbs that are LED because I like LED better than CFL.

If you look real close at the color message boards at the Sonics around town you will see that each pixel is made of a red-blue-green-white LED configuration. Each LED is fired depending on the color saturation required for that pixel. Maybe that is where your grandmother learned the dot matrix name, just like a dot matrix printer.

I was going to replace some of the troublesome lamps in my car with LED's since they have a much longer life span than conventional bulbs. But then I read that you have to tinker with the electrical system because they draw so little power the computer in the car think they are burned out!!!!

Its been creeping in for about a month now...... A few shelves here and there in the garden center at Wal Mart being stocked with the Christmas crud. Soon to go is all the BBQ stuff... (As if people don't BBQ all year long in this climate.)
I wish these retail and advertising folks would wait until the day after Thanksgiving....
