Plaza, Percival Road: 1980s(?) 4 comments
Well, here's another property of indeterminate address. I know that it's at the north-west corner of Percival Road and Jamaica Street, but I didn't see an address on the property, and google is not helpful here. It's certainly in-between John Boy's Auto Repair & Service at 2921 and Stone's Wholesale at 3001.
Just looking at the place, I suspect this was a failed retail strip-mall, but it could also have been a service plaza. Either way, I have no memory of having seen it in operation, though I must have. It appears that all the windows were broken out at some point, or perhaps there was a fire inside. At any rate the place is in poor shape at this point.

I used to live on Jamaica St between 1964 to the eighties the Percival strip mall has been there since my earliest memories. The right side of the building had two convenience store operations. One was in the late sixties and the other in the early seventies. There was also an amusements business that operated there in the seventies...foos ball, pinball and pool. These businesses did not stay open very long and closed in a matter of months. However on the left side of the building operated a business called Galleon Marine which was a fish tackle place that was open for a couple of years. The warehouse with Slone's sign was built in the seventies. If you go next door (right) of the Slone's warehouse up Percival there is a vacant office complex that had the signage Robert Heard Certified Accountant. Again a little further up Percival you will find another warehouse similar to Slone's which was built around late sixties/early seventies. I believe all the properties I mentioned were own or affiliated with Robert Heard.

Behind the building (strip mall), there was a a little trailer that was an Asian Grocery store. My mom used to go there all the time. Cheiko's was the name of it. Before the ones opened on Decker, this was one of the only places you could get Asian groceries.

Looks like any number of old abandoned buildings on Percival as well as Old Percival!!! That entire stretch is in need of serious urban renewal!!
