Three Bean Net Cafe, 5454-A Sunset Boulevard (Lexington): Early November 2010   9 comments

Posted at 9:30 pm in Uncategorized

Commenter Andy pointed out that this Internet cafe just to the right of Publix in the Lexington Place strip mall had closed.

I admit that that's far off my usual beat, and I wasn't even aware it existed, but he says

It was one of the few coffee/internet cafes here in Lexington, and it’s especially sad because it was local and always had a pleasant, relaxed vibe.

Judging from their still extant web site, they went beyond the standard Starbucks/Atlanta Bread/Panera wi-fi model in that they also provided on site printers and computers. I have found such places to be very helpful when I'm away from home and need to print out work documents, driving directions etc..

The name apparently came from the fact that there were three owners. I hope the association with "Three Bean Salad" (which I have always hated) didn't hurt them..

UPDATE 3 April 2011 -- It's to be a yogurt shop:

  1. What killed this place was the awful coffee. I went there a few times and the space was average and the coffee was mediocre.

I'd argue that initially, the Starbucks in Target hurt them too.

But the nail in the coffin would be Jamestown Coffee. If you haven't been there, you need to. It's back towards I-20 on 378 in the same shopping center as Schlotsky's and Red Bowl. It is OUTSTANDING.

The baristas are well trained, the space is wonderful, they have free wifi, and they feature bakery goods and fare from Chef Eric at Stuffed.

Really, when Jamestown came to town, Three Bean had no chance.

  2. Good coffee is good! Now for something completely different. I find it amusing (I am easily amused) that those of us who don't know Ted personally know almost what he looks like from his reflection in closed business windows, and now we almost know what his car looks like.

  3. Don't worry, Ted, I'm not some weirdo stalker. Just, as I said, easily amused.

  4. Sometimes you can avoid a reflection, sometimes you can't (or don't feel like getting out of the car in the cold and dark..)

  5. I would just like to say before the closing it seemed like the people at olies were always trying to sell me coffee when it was obvious I was walking into the net cafe. And if olies sees you even walk near 3 bean someone will run out the door saying "did you know we sell coffee now and have wifi". Oddest thing the wifi was always 3 beans. Anyway just wanted to say.

  9. I am sorry to tell you that Jamestown did not hurt our business at all. We plan on opening again in a mobile capacity.
