I think the only time I have ever stayed at a Super 8 was once when I drove to Florida not knowing it was Daytona 500 weekend, and ended up driving hundreds of miles looking for a place to stay. Given the circumstances, it was OK.

This closing puzzles me a bit as this property was renovated just a few years ago after it closed as The Cambridge Plaza Hotel in 2014 (before which it had been a Best Western). I don't see why it should need a re-working just 5 years later, but apparently that is the case. Of course plans change, and LoopNet says the property is on the market, so any upfit would be on the buyer. It also notes that only 84 of the 115 rooms are "rentable", so I guess it definitely does need some work. This site also notes the availability, and has a nice aerial shot of the property.

In passing, I will note that I really dislike frontage roads like Cherokee Lane which get double-duty out of an Interstate on-ramp.

  1. To further muddle the picture, while it was a Best Western, they had a big billboard bragging about a half million dollar renovation.

  2. Actually this hotel has been closed for over two years. It has a pretty interesting past. As you stated, it was a Best Western, but for many years stayed the Cambridge Plaza Hotel. A hotel investment company purchased this hotel and renovated the property redoing the facade of the place. During the renovations, the building caught fire which gutted the entire fourth floor thus the reason why only 84 of the 115 units are rentable. From what I was told, the fourth floor only looks presentable from the exterior it is completely gutted to the studs. The company also owned the Super 8 referenced on the door. This hotel is rumored to have a large mildew, mold or asbestos problem. The hotel has been shut down multiple times due to this the last time being in Sept 2017. The hotel was auction off a month or so ago for $1.5 million to a respected hotel operator who is good at flipping property's. (He flipped the Hawthorne Suites on Bush River). As an hotel enthusiast and fellow operator, this hotel has always intrigued me.

  3. Motel 6 on exit 113 closed their original location down and is moving into the former Super 8 By Wyndham West Columbia Airport, which is located on 650 Cherokee Ln. the signs for the motel 6 are up from a view of the SCDOT webcam I-26 @mm113. make room for the new motel 6 in that former spot.

  4. Yep, it's already open. That hotel has a pool, but I don't see it listed as an amenity in their website yet. I'm hoping that's just an oversight - I like a good staycation, but a pool is a must.
