Taboo Adult Superstore, 4716 Devine Street: Fall 2014 (soon) 17 comments
Taboo is the follow-on operation to Taco Bell in this little store that sits beside Gills Creek on the tail end of Devine Street.
Like the taco cart downtown, the place is something of a victim to the City of Columbia's zoning zig-zags. Regardless of what you think of the place, they followed the rules in place at the time to open, and ever since then the city has been trying to undo that -- which they finally have done. The place has been in court fighting, but lost their last battle at the end of September.
With the upscaling of the area, I don't see a future for this building, and would not be surprised if the next tenant took it down.
UPDATE 7 January 2020 -- This post turned out to be a false-alarm (one of many for the store). Here is a 2018 false-alarm, and Here is the final 2019 Closing. Also adding a map icon.

It always feels strange to go into one of these types of stores. You never know what you may see or what kind of strange person you may encounter. When I turned 50 a couple of my female friends went to 'This is it' on Two Notch to look for something 'memorable' for my day. STANDING in the corner was a, how can I say it, a 'female pleasuring device'. They told me that they stood there staring at it for a few minutes wondering what the hell could anyone do with something that large. They snapped a photo of it and showed to me and I told them that I could make a table lamp out of it if they wanted one. I never got an offer.

I'm still a little surprised these stores exist anymore. Amazon sells just about everything they would have in the stores (and the reviews are an unfailing delight) and you don't have to worry about running into your pastor shopping on Amazon.

Homer has some handyman skills I'd be boggled by in order to envision the lamp he did...
I think part of the appeal of physical stores is that there is a need to venture out of the house every so often...online shopping has changed the game game considerable in the last 15 years but at the same time, I think people reach a point where they need to get away from a screen and physically interact with something...as much as I enjoy the high-tech capabilities out there nowadays I think it is contributing to loneliness issues a lot of people (myself included) struggle with...

Rick - you must be working some crazy hours if you are on here this time of the night. I saw your post about covering for the 3rd shift manager. Me, I finally got off work around 10 and started hitting the juice about 12 to chill out. Getting ready to hit the sack shortly but had to stop by and see what was going on.

I wouldn't be surprised if this building wound up being razed...my gut feeling is that the piece of property is too small to do much with but I'm inclined to believe that something should work out soon enough, especially with the activity in recent years (Cross Hill Market, Rosewood Crossing, PDQ, MattressFirm and the McDonald's rebuild and a new children's gym) within a quarter-mile radius of this..
The Have Your Say discussion about this place being somewhere else has me thinking that this would go well around the Pine Belt stretch of Two Notch Road (or somewhere between Columbia Place Mall and West Beltline Blvd)...that section of Two Notch Road...

This was a legal business and they were good neighbors who did nothing to harm the neighborhood. I have not had the opportunity to visit but I feel bad that they were run over and vilified the way they were. Maybe it was a good location for this business, maybe not. Regardless, they were treated badly by my ho hum, hypocritical Kings Grant and Heathwood neighbors.

You know it don't matter if you feel weird going in there if that's the case then don't go in but you should not want to put people out of work because you feel wired going in the place that's just messed up

lydia makes too much sense...they've played by the rules and I don't think they've had too many issues...I'd rather have a legal adult store business that is quiet and doesn't annoy neighbors vs. a boisterous bar (I avoid bars mainly because the noise annoys me)...

I said it before somewhere on this site but I will say it again. They should create a Red Light District. Centralize all that kind of activity. From the shops to the strip clubs, centralize it all in one section of town. All the big cities have them why not Columbia?

As long as the business is not causing any problems or is a eyesore or such, then it's no ones business where they locate. And I don't believe that any reputable business owner would locate such a business where it would not be suitable (around schools, churches, etc.) unless they are asking for trouble. Sure if people are outside waving around vibrators or inflatable dolls, or people are waking in and out dressed dominatrices or the Village People then you're going to have problems.
Bottom line, if they aren't causing problems leave them alone!!!!!

It was always uncomfortable to me going there when it was a Taco Bell. It was one of the old style restaurants they had, you know, even before Taco Bell had drive thrus.
Like this one were the drive thru window was on the passenger side of the car.
I did go in to Taboo once a few months ago out of curiosity.
Felt strange.
