Bakers Sports Pub & Grill, 7167 Two Notch Road: 18 October 2013 (open again) 20 comments
Wow!
When commenter badger mentioned that the Columbia Mall outparcel Bakers Sports Pub & Grill appeared to be closed, I thought I might run over there after work to take a look. I certainly did not expect what I found.
On the east side of the building, things looked almost normal, but I noticed as I walked over from my car to the front door that part of the entrance was boarded over. Then I just figured that this was not a business related closing, but that probably they had had a fire. Looking in through the door though, there were no burned sections, just a lot of devastation.
Then I got off the porch and noticed the crime scene tape around the front and west side of the building. Then, walking around (outside the tape boundry..) I saw this:
Once home, a bit of googling established that it was exactly what it looked like -- someone had driven a pickup truck into the west side of the building. And furthermore, it was part of a police chase that saw the truck drive through *another* building, run over one suspect and leave the other suspect (the driver) shot dead by police. It's a pretty incredible story, and in fact I had glanced through it last week without making the connection with Bakers.
The State has a dramatic picture of the pickup truck after it hit the wall.

From what I have heard, the owner of the building is going to bulldoze it and take the money (insurance) and run.

It has only had 3 different people run the place. Can't remember the first after Icy's but after that it was Rookies and then Bakers. Teri-Hot Wings is the only thing I used to get there.

From a previous posting, http://columbiaclosings.com/wordpress/?p=3852
Looks like it was Icy's, Timmy G's, Rookies, and The Loading Dock, and Bakers. (Not necessarily in that order)
I remember when it was Timmy G's and Rookies.

Pretty amazing story. The guy actually ran over his accomplice. . . twice.
I believe this building started life in the late 1980s as a "Computerland" store, before it became Timmy G's.

The Loading Dock must have been first. Then Icy's, Timmy G's, Rookies, Bakers. Because I don't remember The Loading Dock at all.

Isnt this building what's left of or part of it what WAS Yogi Bears Honey Fried Chicken? It wasn't around long, and stayed empty for a long time...I think.

Looks like it may have started out as a Burger Chef.

I recently returned to Columbia after spending 20 years in Denver. I was startled to read this story of its demise., This location back in the 1970s was a restaurant. I believe it was originally a Yogi Bear's Honey Fried Chicken franchise. I remember the overhead lamp shades in the shapes of beehives. In the 1980s it was ComputerLand of Columbia with a satellite office located across the street at what is now Fast Signs. I was a Purchasing and Inventory manager at ComputerLand from 1988 to 1991. This was a great business and owned by Ralph Pickard, a remarkable and decent man who is still around and living in retirement at Lake Murray. Mr. Pickard was an executive for many years with IBM in NY. He left them to start this ComputerLand franchise in the early 80s when retail computer stores were all the rage. We sold 1000s and 1000s of PCs and printers there and employed 40 people. Eventually the business relocated to the Vista before it was the trendy place. That location was at the corner of Lincoln and Gervais at what is now the Liberty Tap room. ComputerLand for years was IBM's biggest PC reseller in SC and it was a wonderful experience working there. I remember sitting at my desk at the downtown location with the ADLUH signing blinking away at me in the early evenings.

It was Timmy Gs, The Loading Dock, Icy's, Rookies, then Bakers. I went there when it was Timmy Gs, in '96 and '97. Their food was great.

Was The Loading Dock a restaurant/bar in the pre-Vista in the early 80's? I vaguely remember this place on Lady Street where we would go for cocktails after work.
I heard the gunshots then the sirens that night. I live too uncomfortably close to Two Notch even though it is a gated community in Arcadia Lakes. I hear them so frequently that I wasn't too disturbed by them that night. After I heard sirens, I knew that something serious was going on.

@joelc - there was a Loading Dock downtown. In the days when PMSC was downtown we used to go there for drinks after work.

Does anyone know where Doug, the cook, and Julie, the waitress are working now. I want to go eat where they work now.

I just saw a facebook posting that they are currently rebuilding the bar area, and are shooting for an April reopening.

Ever since the guy in the truck crashed into the building, right in the area behind the bar, they have been closed. The wall is now repaired and they are working on the inside. Looks like there will be a reopening soon. Stay tuned....

The owner has been working hard to get it opened this spring. He is a friend and a long time member of the Dentsville community. Kudos to Andy Baker for sticking it out in D'Ville and reopening.

I didn't recognize the building from the first shots, but this was the original Icy's before they moved up Two Notch towards N. Brickyard Rd. This place has been under several reincarnations since Icy's left. Don't even remember many of them. I've eaten there several times over the years. The food always was typical bar grub (burgers, wings and such) but it was always good eats....
