Rugged Warehouse, 262 Harbison Boulevard: 2010   26 comments

Posted at 1:05 am in closing

Rugged Warehouse never really caught my notice while it was in the Barnes & Noble plaza on Harbison Boulevard. I hit B&N fairly often, and Outback and Chili's from time to time, but I guess I never go over to the back part of the plaza. I'm not even sure how long it was there. For some reason I can't find my 2009 phonebook, but it's not in this year's, and it's not in 2008. However, I can't find the Forest Drive store in there either, so maybe I'm somehow looking in the wrong place.

(Hat tip to commenter RM.)

UPDATE 4 April 2012 -- As mentioned by commenter Andrew, Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse is in the offing:

  1. I hit this place quite often, and am sorry it went down. They had a wide variety of items. I would call it "Big Lots of clothing." I picked up everything from $150 Merrell boots for $40 to Carhardt sweatshirts for $12, toys, etc. You never knew what you would find. The reason you can't find them in a phonebook is their number is unlisted. Yep, crazy. Reasoning is they don't want you to call and say "Do you have...?" They just want you to come in. They will be missed, but I will still hit the Forest Drive one, and there is one in Florence and Augusta.

  5. I always thought there was more upscale selection at this location than the Forest Drive one (more GAP, Ann Taylor Loft, etc.).

  6. Was this originally a Babies R Us?

  7. @JBL This was actually originally a Micheal's as I recall. Before the current Columbiana Station location was built around ca. 1999 they were located here. They used to have a clock uptop before the storefronts were renovated by DDR.

By the way, Chipolte is indeed coming soon according to something I saw in the paper to the former Alltell Wireless location in one of this particular center outparcels. There was a brief writeup on it in today's The State talking shop article.

  8. Ok folks in the former LifeWay next to Dollar Tree down from this particular Rugged Wearhouse is about to become Anna's Linens...

  9. I always thought it was funny, or maybe just a testament of the Bible Belt, that Harbison could support two religious bookstores pretty much across the street from one another. When I pull up to Total Wine, there is never a doubt about who is going to Total, who is going to A.C. Moore, and who is going to the religious bookstore. Although some of the A.C. Moore people could wander to the bookstore. They don't wander over to Total much.

  10. Jonathan, when the City of Columbia started allowing beer/wine sales on Sunday, Total Wine started opening at 10:00 AM on Sundays. The Christian bookstore was still subject to Lexington County's blue laws, so they weren't allowed to open until 1:30 PM. We always joked you could kill 3 1/2 hours in Total Wine while you waited for the Christian bookstore to open.

  11. Family Christian Bookstores moved into Harbison Center from Columbiana Centre (as I recall) shortly before Bi-Lo #84 moved out into Bi-Lo #442 (6021 St. Andrews Road) in late 2001/early 2002

I'm not sure how long LifeWay was there but shortly after Boater's World closed their brick & mortar stores, LifeWay moved into the former Boater's World at Columbiana Station. You can still shop Boater's world at boatersworld.com (they are now owned by Ritz Interactive) much like is the case with Circuit City/CompUSA (Systemax Group), Service Merchandise (Raymond Zimmerman) if you go on their respective (dot)com names...

  12. folks, this is about to become a place called Off-Broadway shoes...and the two stores adjacent to this are now showing as vacant meaning the Avenue that used to be here is closing and Toys & Games, Etc. closed recently as well...not sure what DDR has in mind but we shall see...

  13. folks, a tarp indicating Off Broadway Shoes is coming soon has been placed and the interior work is about to get underway in this former Micheal's* turned Rugged Wearhouse.

    * this was originally a Micheal's before their current location at Columbiana Station opened ca. 1999

Once Upon a Child is expanding into the former Toys & Games Etc. spot.

Also, Avenue (between Once Upon a Child and where Off Broadway Shoes is) is closing...currently liquidating their inventory.

  14. Off Broadway is big score for this shopping center. Looks like they are finally trying to get this center out of mediocracy with Chipolte, Starbucks and this. Not sure what else has been added the last few years but this place always used to be one of my least favorite centers on Harbison (though I did enjoy Rugged Warehouse sometimes and the restaurants).

  15. j, here is Harbison Court's current siteplan

Office Depot will be closing in about a month and once it does, that opens up another opportunity for Harbison Court.

    Andrew

    14 May 12 at 5:01 pm

  16. Thanks. Is Tenant 29 where Office Depot is currently?

    j

    14 May 12 at 9:17 pm

  17. 29 is, indeed, where Office Depot will be closing June 16. Until OfficeMax's pullout of the Columbia market in 2006, it was an OfficeMax interestingly enough

  18. Just as Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse gets going here and Anna's Linens is goign now in the former LifeWay, Office Depot (which is a former OfficeMax) is now officially done for

  19. * btw, Ted, when you get the Office Depot pics at Harbison Court, might want to take some to do a post on Avenue, which recently closed between Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse and Once Upon A Child

  20. Is Off Broadway gone now too? I drove by it last week and the sign was gone.

  21. In light of Jessica's inquiry I checked the Harbison Court siteplan and it confirmed my suspicion (which I've already posted on Have Your say) that Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse at Harbison Court is no more....

  22. Is it just me, or does it seem like this mall has been in declined since Barnes & Noble was forced out?

    Tom

    14 Sep 17 at 2:21 pm

  23. It has undergone a significant overhaul since Barnes & Noble left but I know that quite a few folks were less than thrilled about seeing them go in favor of Nordstrom Rack...but some of the cases are issues with the companies as a whole...like GolfSmith has left but that was a result of the company's bankruptcy...and Regency Beauty Insitute has closed but that was a companywide shutdown (same with Hancock Fabrics)...I've found it mind boggling that DDR has been able to keep spaces filled as easily as they have...admittedly I'm not much of a book person but I hated to see Barnes & Noble go...Tuesday Morning has moved into Hancock Fabrics's former space and the space they moved from on St. Andrews needs something (I wish I knew what) to give it a major boost and new life...

  24. I saw a sign for Shoe Carnival on what I think might be this store earlier today. Shoe Carnival is currently located at 142 Harbison Blvd in the Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Publix Plaza. Does anyone know if Shoe Carnival is moving?

    James R

  25. Shoe Carnival is indeed moving back to Harbison Court...they were (late 90s) in Harbison Court where Dollar Tree is now but moved into the space James referenced when DressBarn that was there originally closed. Where they're moving now is actually next door in a space that was previously Regency Beauty Institue which has recently closed systemwide.

  26. Thanks for the clarification Andrew. I saw the sign from Harbison as I was driving by, so it was hard to tell for sure which storefront the sign was on.
