When I finally got over to Forest Lake Park after commenter Sidney mentioned that the gym was being torn down, I found the whole place fenced off and closed. Presumably there is an upfit planned here, but oddly, I can find no mention of it on the Richland County Recreation Commission site. Elsewhere on the site there is a ten year plan for the system, but the only mention of the park there is that it is in "fair" condition and could be better. I don't see any news stories about it either.

I actually did not realize this was a park -- I thought it was all part of the adjacent elementary school. It looks to have been a pleasant enough place.

Also, for the record, I have used the term Forest Lake Park on this site before to talk about the park attached to the old Forest Lake Shopping Center, which is apparently technically incorrect.

(Hat tip to commenter Sidney)

  1. This is all being done as part of the replacement of Forest Lake Elementary. The new school is going to be built on the site of the old district 2 office. When it is complete, the current school will be torn down. The current school campus will be used to extend the parent pickup road and will get the school in compliance with DOT.

  2. I attended Forest Lake Elementary years ago. The school was first built in the 1950s and a new library was built in the early 1960s. The District Two offices were originally built in the 1960s as well.

  3. Really sad to hear about this. I went to Forest Lake, in the 80's the park was an actual park, and used by the school as well. Played a lot of basketball there during High School. They had a long running after school program there, I didn't attend the after school thing, but knew lots of kids that did.
