Link to the article is bad, sir. When clicked, you get the 404 Not Found thing...
As the saying goes: "we get the government (or in this particular case, the laws) we deserve." No one has yet been able to answer the question of *WHY* selling food has anything to do with owning a bar or selling drinks??
Methinks when the verbiage of the law was written, the whole "if'n you're gonna sell likker, you have to sell eats too" was included to mollify certain segments of the population. Nobody said anything at the time. Now, here we are.
Should the law be changed? I think so, as I don't feel it's right to force someone to engage in a business they don't want to be in. However, trying to get laws changed regarding drinking in the state of SC is akin to treading through a minefield.
Stay tuned. If unchanged, this will be used to close any other establishment deemed "undesirable"

Yeah...no
Not everything's racist.
When these laws were enacted it was a part of a overall response to all the ultra cheap drinks being served.25 cent shooters at pugs!
Good times!Bad timesUltra cheap booze = people getting ultra wasted
Funny thing though
It wasn't until " certain segments of the population" began shooting up five points and the Vista, that these laws were truly enforced.John G

Idiotic laws written by bible thumping morons. 5 pts is dying, more and more open store fronts and not just at the end of Harden across from FOod Lion.

Ted is correct. I was referring to the language of the law being set to appease those who disagree with drinking.
I'm no fan of what Five Points has become. And, there's *plenty* of blame to go around for why it is how it is. I don't have the answer, but if the end goal is to get rid of nuisance businesses, I would think there are easier, more precise, legal ways to accomplish that.

All I have to say, is Life's a Bitch, then you die. Dont like it? there are other places to go to. I agree to some degree that the Southern Baptists and other Denominations tend to overstep their boundaries....but that's anywhere you go. USC is a Party College..always was and always will be. The Vista is becoming more and more a problem also with trouble makers and little drunk college kiddies and others causin' problems. I avoid those places anymore like the black plague..not worth the time or effort anymore. Columbia will be nothing more than it is..it aint Atlanta, it aint Charleston, it aint Charlotte NC..it's Columbia. Just remember...it's Columbia.

The Vista is becoming that way because all the bars are closing in 5 Points. Close them down in one area, and they will migrate to another area. Now, instead of having trouble contained to one area (5 Points), the police have much more to cover with The Vista.

Harpootlian won't care about anything that happens in the Vista. After all, it's not in his back yard.
All this crap started when they stopped smoking in bars. Everyone had to flock out on the sidewalks unless the bar had a deck our an outdoor seating area. then Duvall had to go and F that up.....

What's really messed up with Group Therapy is that they are only going after the likker license, not beer and wine....

Five Points is dying and will probably be dead in a few years. The neighborhood is asking what it wants, so why are they all surprised that nothing in to fill the void?

When they came for... is this a Martin Niemöller reference? Because it fits the Richland County senator behind all this, and no one can stand up to him. Five Points will be a parking lot in 5 years.
